If you find yourself nodding in agreement to the following questions, perhaps it is time to consider your organization’s digital transformation. It is never too late to set out on the journey to the cloud, and here’s how IBM’s Modern Data Protection portfolio helps you and your organization on that journey. Your data protection journey to the cloud can take many paths. Here is how IBM helps your organization navigate that journey, enabling a successful modern data protection implementation that leverages the cloud.
- Does your organization want to ensure a successful data protection journey to the cloud?
- Do you manage billions of objects on your servers?
- Is your organization interested in reducing infrastructure costs without impacting performance?
- Is your organization concerned about cyber threats and your ability to recover from them?
Let us look at a number of the key advantages IBM’s Modern Data Protection portfolio has for your journey to the cloud, and put them into perspective for today’s data protection landscape.
IBM Spectrum Protect
IBM Spectrum Protect™ can help any organization, small, medium, or large to simplify their data protection infrastructures with a software-defined solution that meets their needs. Whether that infrastructure includes physical file servers, virtual environments, container environments, or environments with a vast range of applications, the organization decides how to manage its data across platforms, on-premises, cloud private or public.
Savings
IBM Spectrum Protect is a scalable data protection solution for physical file servers, applications, and virtual environments. Choosing IBM Spectrum Protect enables your organization to scale up to manage billions of storage objects across multiple servers, the product is built for enterprise scalability at affordable cost. Reduced backup infrastructure costs with storage efficiencies such as data deduplication, compression, and the ability to migrate data to tape and object storage, ensure that clients can cut the overall expenditure associated with infrastructure costs. In essence, IBM Spectrum Protect supports organizations in their evolution to, and adoption of a hybrid multi-cloud infrastructure.
Performance
With IBM’s vast experience, organizations have come to trust the brand and know that adoption comes with digital evolution and inbuilt best practices. IBM Spectrum Protect and IBM Spectrum Protect Plus components both deliver tested and proven architectural blueprints to help organizations to leave the guesswork behind when it comes to planning, configuring, and deploying their infrastructures.
IBM Spectrum Protect servers can expand to manage billions of objects per server, so there is less disruption and complexity as backup workloads grow. IBM Spectrum Protect can reduce backup and restore times for large applications and virtual machines.
Multicloud
With a focus on modernising data protection, organizations continue to move towards the cloud. IBM Spectrum Protect provides security-rich and cost-effective backup to the cloud. Container storage pools enable external cloud and object storage without the requirement to add more costly hardware or gateways. Choose from popular cloud environments such as IBM Cloud, Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, Microsoft Azure Blob storage, in addition to other validated S3 object storage services. These container storage pools include in-line data deduplication and compression for efficient use of space and bandwidth, with the added safety net of encryption to keep your data safe from cyber-attacks.
Cyber resilience
In addition to IBM Spectrum Protect’s encryption capabilities already mentioned, the product also issues security notifications for potential ransomware attacks to administrators so that organizations are easily able to monitor the health of their infrastructures. Machine learning is used to detect abnormal changes to workload backup patterns resembling Ransomware-like infections. If issues are detected, administrators are notified, and warning messages are displayed in the Operations Center. In addition to that, preventative measures help organizations ensure the cyber resiliency of their data. Two-key authorization for administrator commands adds another layer of cyber resilience because it imposes dual authorization access to prevent data loss, while data encryption and native support for tape, adds reassurance for organizations that are concerned about cyber resilience.
IBM Spectrum Protect Plus
Today’s data landscape is challenged by cyber-threats, exponential data growth, and an ever-increasing reliance on our data, a product that is designed for hybrid environments which can help organizations with their digital transformation, is crucial.
Savings
At the outset, IBM Spectrum Protect Plus offers clients flexible licensing to suit their different organization’s infrastructural needs and budget. Cost-effective data retention for virtual machines, databases, Microsoft Windows file systems, SaaS workload protection, and applications, enables organizations to backup copy data for reuse to on-premises and cloud-based object storage. In addition, backing up data to physical or virtual tape through an IBM Spectrum Protect server offers longer term data retention. In effect, organizations are given the flexibility to save cost by choosing where their data lives. In choosing data copy options with cloud services such as IBM Cloud Object Storage service, AWS, and Microsoft Azure clients have many options.
As data continues to grow exponentially, IBM Spectrum Protect Plus enables organizations to achieve cost-effective data archival through integration with Amazon S3 Glacier, Azure Archive, and IBM Cloud Object Storage Archive. Additionally, you can archive to physical tape and VTL through the IBM Spectrum Protect server.
Performance
With automated backup and restore service level agreement policies, and near instant data recovery, IBM Spectrum Protect Plus saves clients time and effort. In addition, instant access to data saves time without holding up performance for instant access to data for custom data reuse options.
Multicloud
IBM Spectrum Protect Plus protects a wide range of workloads including Microsoft SQL, MongoDB and Oracle databases. For cloud environments that include AWS with EC2 instances, these can be protected with EBS snapshots. For organizations that have containerized workloads, IBM Spectrum Protect Plus offers an easy-to-deploy easy-to-manage solution for Kubernetes environments. SLA policies can be defined to run on a schedule to protect persistent volume. Such policies can also replicate data to secondary sites, and copy data to object storage or to IBM Spectrum Protect for secure long-term data retention.
IBM Spectrum Protect Plus provides Representational State Transfer (REST) application programming interfaces (APIs), enabling an application client to use storage management functions. Otherwise the REST API can be employed for born-in-the-cloud applications.
Cyber resilience
Cyber resiliency must be a constituent part of any organization’s digital transformation. It’s not a question of if an attack will occur anymore, but rather when an attack will occur. Cyber resiliency support is enabled by locking down data on IBM Cloud Object Storage using retention vaults and air-gapping data on physical tape via integration with IBM Spectrum Protect. In addition to that capability, the product’s ability to integrate with IBM Spectrum Protect to safeguard data in a time when cyber resiliency is critical to the integrity of our growing data and our reliance on the integrity of that data.
