  • 1.  What happened to Business Central, KIE Server and Smart Router in Version 9?

    Posted Mon August 07, 2023 11:48 AM

I read that Business Central, KIE Server and Smart Router have been discontinued in the latest version but haven't found an explanation of which components have now this responsibilities. I haven't found any architecture diagrams for V9. Please can you give more detail about the new components.

    Thanks in advance.

There will be more on this in the coming weeks. The emphasis in the community projects for Drools and jBPM has been into the Kogito architecture for the last few years and rapidly moving away from KIE Server. The level of support for Enterprise on these projects is where the emphasis away from traditional Java EE environments like KIE Server, Smart Router and Business Central and more towards the Cloud Native delivery mechanisms. The first release of 9.0 focused just on Decisions components that have been released going back to when the project was enterprise backed with the first released version for Kogito under Red Hat in 7.11. With the completion of straight through processes being supported in the Enterprise version, the like for like in execution environment was available on the Decisions side. There will be more components being rolled out over the next several months in the 9.x architectures focused on process and where that technology is going.

The features listed are still supported under the 8.x stream of the product release. The 9x stream should be treated as the Cloud Native emphasized release, whereas the 8.x stream is the traditional architectures originally associated with the project.

@Tim Wuthenow, I am still confused. I just saw the exercises in https://bamoe.university/ site which speak about V9 and it stills mention the use of Business Central and KIE Server... I suggest to include a disclaimer in the release notes. Perhaps state that the components will be removed "in a coming" release (v9 stream), not right now.

Any idea when BPMN will be deployed under Kogito instead of KIE Server (perhaps finishing TechXchange? By the way I haven't seen any architecture diagrams for V9. By the way, reviewing Kogito architecture, it speaks about Infinispan and MongoDB for persistency. So another doubt is if BAM OE 9.x will support other DBs.

    Regards.

So the support for 9.0 as it stands as released for BPMN is focused just on Straight through processes, those will not have a persistence layer.

There will be an update soon on the architectures for Kogito process with persistence. We are actively working in the community to finalize the architectures that we will be delivering in the enterprise release. These releases will be soon in community and available as soon as possible in Enterprise.

I've updated the Process exercises to reflect the proper Version 8 logic that should be there as I must have missed those when distinguishing.
