PatternMatch_Identify: Old technology? Why works only with black-white images?

I've been wondering why to this day PatternMatch_Identify action is limited to black and white (1 bit depth) image.
Most of the images I receive onsite are color images. I know color images are better for Japanese letter detection.
So, if I need to use PatternMatch_xxxx actions to identify page type, I must first make an extra, bi-tonal image.
FindFingerprint action seems to be able to handle color images, but I find this action unable to adjust the image_offset.
I'd have to define Anchor fields for image_offset to be accurate, thus need to call PatternMatch_xxxx actions.
Can IBM finally make PatternMatch_xxx actions workable with color tifs?

    v9.1.9 manual
    PatternMatch_Identify

"This action requires the current page image to be bi-tonal (black and white). Grayscale or color images cause the action to fail. "

Hey, thanks for this very clear and detailed software enhancement request.  I've asked the Datacap Product Management team for a link where you can actually submit a software Enhancement Request and track it during its progress.  Stay tuned.
