  • 1.  Not able to find the SQL server instance

    Posted Fri March 01, 2024 02:20 PM

    Hi Team,

Am new to ILMT and trying trying to explore ILMT product on my local Windows machine (Windows 11 Enterprise).

Installed SQL 2022 Express version  (TCP/IP  Enabled)
While trying to install BigFix (BigFix-BES-10.0.9.21) am end-up getting below error (Tried with both evaluation and production type)
I guess, the problem is with my SQL configuration. Am not good with Sql server though.
I couldn't find much information on the SQL configuration for bigfix either on IBM or HCL sites in order to rectify this issue.
It would be a great help, if someone can provide detailed information on the SQL configuration with Big fix & ILMT.
    Best regards,
    Prasanth.

    Hello Prasanth,
Are you using a remote or local MS SQL Server instance ?

I can see two root causes :
    • BigFix installer is not able to detect the MSSQL installation instance from the Windows Registry,
    • Some ODBC failure occurred.

The BigFix installer refers to the "InstalledInstances" value under one of the following registry keys:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server
Could you please check and export the keys above from the Windows Registry?

Please also export the following  registry key for review of 'UseRemoteDB' param:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\BigFix

    Hi,

    according to HCL documentation, https://help.hcltechsw.com/bigfix/10.0/inventory/Inventory/planinconf/r_software_requirements.html

you have to be at least on BF 10.0.13 to use MS SQL Server 2022. With your BF versioon you can use up to MS SQL Server 2019.

    regards Michael

    Hello Prasanth,

Microsoft SQL Server 2022 is supported by 10.0.9.21.
That Software requirements guideline posted by Michael is for BFI (ILMT 'competitor').

    Anyhow,
As already stated I'd start with looking into those three Windows Registry keys...
In particular that "InstalledInstances" value is used for a query to obtain the info about the existing SQL Server Instance setup like available protocols, TCP ports and Named Pipes.

Value of 'UseRemoteDB' param should be set to "0" (default) in your case (it means a local SQL Server instance).

    At last,
Please check if any log files (under 'C:\Users\{USERNAME}\AppData\Local\BigFix') associated with the BigFix installer are being produced upon this failed attempt.
Those log files are a valuable source of hints...
