  • 1.  Is NetApp storage support on Azure Red Hat OpenShift for CP4BA-FileNet?

    Posted Wed August 30, 2023 09:22 AM

    Hi,

Thanks for looking into this question. I am trying to get clarity on the below queries from a NetApp storage compatibility point of view.

    1. Is NetApp storage support on Azure Red Hat OpenShift for CP4BA-FileNet?
    2. We learned that this is not supported. If this is correct, then do we have any future roadmaps?
    3. Is there any other way to use NetApp storage (as client want to use that) with FileNet with OpenShift Container?

What do you mean by "NetApp storage"? Is this for the containers themselves, or for the document content that is stored in a FileNet repository?

..and what kind of NetApp Storage? -- Trident? OnTAP Snaplock? StorageGrid? Something else?

We demo client that FileNet can run on ARO. We used storage as ODF. Client is interested to migrate from on-prem to Azure - OpenShift. Currently client is using NetApp storage for on-prem FileNet and asked whether Netapp storage will support on OpenShift Cluster or not?

I don't have answer for kind of NetApp Storage. Perhaps it is NetApp Ontap storage.

It will be really great if you can share the details available (including the kind of NetApp storage supported).

    Hi @Pranav Kumar,

the hard- and software supported in different releases of IBM Software products is documented in the product compatibility matrix which you can access from https://www.ibm.com/software/reports/compatibility/clarity/softwareReqsForProduct.html

That said, IBM meanwhile documents the storage supported by IBM FileNet Content Manager in a separate tech note (you'll find a link to this tech note also in the "hardware" section of the product compatibility report):

    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/6592835

The tech note links you to detailed descriptions which type of storage hardware is supported in different releases alongside with known restrictions.

In case your client wants to deploy FN CM on ARO, you might consider moving the storage also to Azure in order to avoid inefficient network transfers. Otherwise you might end up that content requested by a client in the same location as the on-prem datacenter (and thus the NetApp storage) will be transferred over the wire to the Azure cloud (where CPE and ICN are running) and from there back to the client.

Hope this helps to answer your clients question?

    Best regards

AWS added Snaplock support to their netapp ontapp SaaS offering this summer, is the lack of support for Snaplock FCDs on containers just a matter of it not being certified (because until now it didn't make a ton of sense with most container deployments in the cloud) or is there a known issue?

    Best,

    Eric

    Eric

If the NetApp storage, is just "disk storage" -- as opposed to needing to be defined as a Fixed Content Device -- then it should work just fine.

We need to do an explicit qualification of NetApp as a Fixed Content Device with a container installation...and that has not been scheduled at this time.
