  • 1.  How do you decide which ICN version to deploy?

    Posted Thu May 11, 2023 09:14 AM

There are currently at least 3 supported versions. 3.0.11, 3.0.12 and 3.0.13.  Our currently deployed version is 3.0.11-IF003. Our repository is FileNet Content Manager. Is there an advantage to jumping to 3.0.12 or 3.0.13 vs just applying the latest Interim fixes to 3.0.11?

    Hello Chuck,
The advantage to 3.0.12/13 is that you will get access to new capabilities provided in those releases. While 3.0.11 is still supported, IBM provides fixes to existing function but does retro-fit new capabilities. You can find the list of new capabilities in the ICN documentation at
    https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/content-navigator/3.0.12?topic=navigator-whats-new-users-in-content-3012
    https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/content-navigator/3.0.13?topic=navigator-whats-new-in-content-3013

If you don't need any of those new capabilities then there is less incentive to upgrade from a release that is working just fine for you.

    hello Chuck,

3011 is a Long-Term Support Release (LTSR). It will receive fixes for new defects, thru the LTSR period.
You can upgrade to the latest IF of 3011 - but I would definitely recommend going to 3013 IF002.

ICN 3.0.11 is a long-term support release, so it will have a longer period as a fully supported release than ICN 3.0.12 or 3.0.13. So, unless there is a specific feature that you need in the newer releases, I suggest you stay on 3.0.11 and apply the iFixes as they are released.

Actually the problem is a much wider one....

we have serval large customers (I define them as > 5000 users) mostly datacenters providing ECM services to their clients. One has > 2500 steps in FileNet BPM workflows (a loan approval)

If they would update to ever single release whole departments (business and IT) would be permanently dedicated to regression testing... impossible.
(BTW: IBM has done a great job over the last years to keep regression problems to a minimum, compliments!)

IBM recognized this a few years ago and introduced the LTSRs. We recommended to all our customers to stick with those and deviate from this only in very special reasons and so they did and all are happy.

All of them are on CPE LTSRs, most of them are on ICN LTSRs. Obvious reason is to absolutely require a new feature (security fixes are back ported).
What happens sometimes is that we deploy newer versions of Daeja to ICN because there is a fix that is badly needed.

    Hope this helps,

    /Gerold

    Gerold,

    I 100% agree.

Testing and Validating is the trouble with trying to stay on the new releases. It's even an issue with the IF releases for the LTSRs, but not as bad.  The biggest reason I posed the question in the first place is that we recently went through a round of updates to BAW (new version), CPE (IF) and ICN (IF). Along the way we found several "bugs". For some of the issues we found we were advised to move to one of the new releases.

    Thanks for your response.
