  • 1.  FileNet Extended Storage on cloud

The current Filenet system is on-premises, if we need to have extended storage in cloud then how this can be achieved.

    1. Can we have FileNet the Extended Storage on the cloud which can be used for archiving and Normal Storage for day to day operations?
    2. If Yes, how to go about implementing this change?

Is there any white paper available which take about the approach for the above-mentioned implementation approach?

Sure, this a kind of 'hierarchical' storage strategy that you are choosing here... move from expensive and fast to slower and cheaper.

You need to define the new storage areas/policies with your cloud storage first.
Then define a periodic Move Content sweep job with a filter (e.g. today-date_created>7 years) and run it.

This will move the documents from the source area to the target area in the background and it is completely transparent to any application.
IF there is still retention on the source documents you might get errors though, can't remember the exact circumstances but depends on FN version, storage device and aligned/unaliged retention management.

    Hope this helps,
    /Gerold

    Hi Mahamood,

FileNet has the option to use cloud storage, e.g. S3 storage devices with an "Advanced Storage Area"

Please find more details in the FileNet Knowledge Center:

    https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSNW2F_5.5.0/com.ibm.p8.ce.admin.tasks.doc/p8pcc232.htm

You can have several storage areas, e.g. on premise and on cloud and use a sweep job to move content from one storage area to another:

Your guidance really helped and I believe the sweeping approach mentioned in the documentation we are looking for. I have few more queries on this.

    1. We are currently using P8 5.2.0 version, I believe this version does not support cloud storage correct?  ( Reference link https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/SSNW2F_5.2.1/com.ibm.p8.ce.admin.tasks.doc/p8pcc097.htm )

    2.  We have enough disk space in Disaster Recovery Server, so can we used the space from another server to move the content using sweeping? I understand it is not good practice but in the worst case, if we use this should still work correctly?

    3. Final can you please confirm in sweeping we are just moving the content from one storage to another storage, so post content move end-user still will be able to access the document from FileNet. Is that correct understanding, this holds good in terms of whether it is content is moved to Filestore or Cloud Storage or other server disk space.

Thanks in advance for your right direction.

Yes Mahamood, you need to update to a newer supported version. The principle of moving content between Storage areass is transparent to the user, so the answer is yes, the end-users will be able to access the content after you move the documents to a new storage area.

Ad No 2: The extra storage must be reachable from the CPE server via CIFS or share. Does not matter if it is 'on another server'.

    Ad No 3: Simple yes.

As Stefan said, 5.2.0 is really ancient, you must upgrade if this is a production system and not a playground!!!!

In production, we have FileNet 5.2.1.5 and planning to enable Cloud Storage for sweeping the content.

    1. In terms of the licensing, I believe in existing production if we opt to go with cloud storage for FileNet then change in storage area should not require any additional license from FileNet side correct?

    2. Considering we are having 5.2.1.5, is cloud storage will work with AWS or it will work only with IBM cloud?

    Thanks in advance.

    For all compatibility questions

    https://www.ibm.com/software/reports/compatibility/clarity/softwareReqsForProduct.html

is your friend. Cloud storage was not supported in 5.2.x. OpenStack was the closest. ICOS was also not supported.
