Thank you, Massimiliano. Adding the Thumbnail property to the Magazine View seems to have solved my problem.

Hi Tom,
to show the document thumbnails in the magazine view, first you need to enable the CPE to generate the thumbnails (see https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/filenet-p8-platform/5.5.11?topic=development-thumbnails), then you have to add the Thumbnails property to the Selected Properties both in the Browse tab of the repository defined in the Navigator Administration for the FileNet object store (see screenshot below).
See also this page for instructions: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/ibm-content-navigator-known-issue-download-count-incremented-each-time-document-accessed-ibm-filenet-p8

Is there a way to get document thumbnails to show in the filmstrip view of ICN when looking at a folder of documents?
This is the default behavior:

This is what happens when I modify the properties of the document in list view:

The thumbnail of the documents I modified are now being used in place of the icon. When I log off and back on, the system reverts to using the icons.
Is there a way to get it to show the thumbnails by default?
