ICP4BA Installation

  • 1.  ICP4BA Installation

    Hello,

I'm attempting ICM4BA installation on OpenShift. I want to use SQL Server as database. I will appreciate if someone can point to correct documentation as how I can achieve this? IBM Knowledge Center has very limited and insufficient information on this.

    Hey Nitin -

If you're referring to the database configuration to be used with components like IBM Business Automation Workflow, Business Automation Studio, IBM FileNet® Content Manager, and IBM Business Automation Navigator then I'm afraid you can only choose between DB2, Oracle and PostgreSQL.

    See:
    https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/cloud-paks/cp-biz-automation/21.0.3?topic=authoring-creating-required-databases

    Hope this helps.

So we have on-premise server based IBM Case Manager implementation since 2017 using SQL Server 2016 which we want to move to ICP4BA containers. Looks like this will not work and we are now stuck with on-premise. Is that IBM's road-map to make life difficult?

    Hi Nitin,

I am not an expert in this area but have been through a few battles.  CP4BA will support SQL as the database For FileNet. Someone else already posted the link for that.  To run in containers you will need to upgrade from Case Manager to Business Automation Workflow (BAW). Case Manager has an end of support date of April 2023 I believe so you need to be moving there regardless.

The documentation between CP4BA and FileNet Content Manager and BAW/CaseManger makes this a whole bunch more confusing than it needs to be.

    Hello Chuck,

I agree with you, documentation is really confusing, a lot. Different URLs tell you different stories. I know ICM end of support date in April 2023. That is different issue as what if we have just pure ICM based solution, what shall we do? We have no intention to move to BAW as that is over-killing us, why to add extra servers in architecture, when they are not required? We have heave P8 workflow implementation with our Case solutions. What will happen to those? Even we move ICM ot BAW and continue using just Case part by not moving to WorkflowCenter, why we should deal with BAW overheads? Plus looks like SQL Server is not supported by BAW containers .... this is leads more confusing rather than straight and clear answers.

I hope someone can chime with clear answers and documentation.

    Hi Chuck, Nitin,

While not all pods in CP4BA support MS SQL now, please check with your IBM account managers about our future plans, because the Cloud Pak keeps improving.

I also wanted to mention that if you are on legacy Case Manager now, and your goal is migrating to CP4BA, then you can skip the BAW phase as an option. We have migration procedures from legacy Case Manager straight to CP4BA:

Migrating IBM Case Manager V5.3.3 interim fix 7 to IBM Business Automation Workflow 20.0.0.2 on containers
    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/6370107

Migration of ICM 533 IF9 (Development environment) to BAW 2102 CP4BA Authoring environment on containers

    Sergei,

Following link shows FileNet supports SQL Server. Very confusing information .... who can provide clear documentation?

    Hi Nitin,
FileNet (only) supports a container installation using SQL Server. See
    https://www.ibm.com/software/reports/compatibility/clarity-reports/report/html/softwareReqsForProduct?deliverableId=2341B160D8FF11EBAA175CFD3E629A2A&osPlatforms=AIX|Linux|Windows&duComponentIds=S003|S010|S009|S004|S006|S008|S005|S007|C012|C013|C011|C014&mandatoryCapIds=30|9|132|20|26&optionalCapIds=380|12|128|35|19|16|27

This custom resource file for FNCM shows how this would be implemented.
    https://github.com/ibm-ecm/container-samples/blob/5.5.8/descriptors/ibm_fncm_cr_production_FC_content.yaml

I am afraid that for your situation, since Case Manager has been consolidated with Business Automation Workflow, the choice of deploying to containers is not currently available
    https://www.ibm.com/software/reports/compatibility/clarity-reports/report/html/softwareReqsForProduct?deliverableId=71C22290D7DB11EBAA175CFD3E629A2A&osPlatforms=Linux|Mac%20OS|Windows&duComponentIds=D010|D009|D011|S015|S014|S013|C027|C032|C017|C024|C023|C029|C018|C021|C022|C030|C028|C020|C025|C031|C016|C034|C019|C026&mandatoryCapIds=71|26&optionalCapIds=134|62|127|9|401|132|20|161
=> Supported Software tab => Database; hovering over the button SQL Server Row - Containers column you find that detailed:

Though probably not the response you hoped for, I hope this provides the documentation you required to get that sorted?
