Q&A cheat sheet: Getting Started with CP4BA Installation

The quickest way to install IBM Cloud Pak for Business Automation 21.0.2 is to use the demo deployment. The following entry-level questions provide guidance and tips to help you follow the right steps.  

Before you begin, review what you need to know before you start an installation. You must plan your demo deployments properly, which includes considering what you want to install, what software you need, and what type of storage to use.

  • System requirements

  • Capabilities you want to install. For example, Operational Decision Manager, Automation Decision Services, and FileNet Content Manager.


Now answer the questions below to help you complete the appropriate tasks for your environment.

1. Do you have an existing Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform cluster?

 

Cloud Pak for Business Automation must be installed on a Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform Version 4.6 or later.

Options What to do: 
You already have an OpenShift 4.6 (or higher) cluster a) Go to 3. Do you already have supported persistent storage on your cluster?


You have an older version of OpenShift a) Upgrade your cluster. For details, see the upgrade section in the Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform documentation.
b) Then, go to 3. Do you already have supported persistent storage on your cluster?

You don't have an OpenShift cluster  Go to 2.  Where do you want to host your Cloud Pak for Business Automation Installation? 




2.  Where do you want to host your Cloud Pak for Business Automation installation?

 

You can install Cloud Pak for Business Automation on-premises or on the public IBM Cloud. Your choice of installation environment determines what you need to configure on Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform (OCP).

Options What to do: 
You want to install Cloud Pak for Business Automation on-premises a) Follow the Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4.6 documentation to install OpenShift.  Additional guidance on setting up OpenShift is available in the IBM Cloud Paks documentation.
b) Go to 3. Does your cluster already have a storage class that you can use?

You want to install Cloud Pak for Business Automation on the IBM Cloud a) Create the cluster on ROKS.
b) Go to 3. Does your cluster already have a storage class that you can use?

Here are samples of the storage that we support: 

  • Network File System (NFS)
  • Red Hat OpenShift Container Storage: Version 4.6 or later

 

Check that you have storage that works with the capability that you plan to install.


Options What to do: 
You have the supported storage a) Go to 4. Do you have your IBM entitlement key?

You don't have supported storage a) Decide which storage you want to use.  
b) Follow the relevant steps in Setting up shared persistent storage.
c) Go to  4. Do you have your IBM entitlement key?



4. Do you have your IBM entitlement key?

 

The Cloud Pak for Business Automation container images are hosted on the IBM Entitled Registry. To access the images, you must have your IBM entitlement key.


Options What to do: 
You have your IBM entitlement key a) Go to 5. Preparing the demo deployment. 

You don't have IBM entitlement key a) Log in to MyIBM Container Software Library with the IBMid and password that is associated with the entitled software. In the Container software library tile, verify your entitlement on the View library page, and then go to Get entitlement key to retrieve the key. Remember: Take a note of the key so that you can enter it when you create the deployment.
b) Go to 5. Preparing the demo deployment.

Complete the demo deployment preparation a) Follow the guidance in preparing the demo deployment. 
b) Go to 6. Setting up the demo deployment cluster.

Options What to do: 
Set up the cluster in the OCP console a) Follow the steps to complete the setup by using the operator hub
b) Go to 7. Installing a demo deployment.

Set up the cluster by using the script a) Follow the steps to complete the setup by using the admin script.
b) Go to 7. Installing a demo deployment.

Installing demo deployment in the OCP console a) Follow the steps to complete the installation of the demo deployment by using the operator hub. 
b) Go to 8. Troubleshooting if there is a problem during the installation.
