IBM watsonx Orchestrate, The Future of Automation is here!

IBM watsonx Orchestrate looks to infuse intelligence into the day-to-day work of any business worker to help keep up with the constant demand in productivity. This is essentially the value proposition of so many (most?:) solutions out there today but Orchestrate looks to combine existing and brand new technologies in such a meaningful way that it will likely transform the landscape of automation and set a new standard on what software can do for the business.

The unique combination of value that I see as foundational pillars are the following (so far!):

  • language: it can be addressed in natural language, this is not new but this is now something everyone needs/expects; you can type what you want and eventually speak to it. Combined with smart suggestions based on know patterns of what you might want to do next to click on, it can make a conversation extremely productive with little effort.

  • availability: it looks at eventually being available in the most popular communication platforms where workers already are, such a such as Slack or Microsoft Teams so no one needs to learn/go to a new tool and instead can interact with numerous applications from the one app they are already very familiar with to collaborate with their other peers on a daily basis.

  • intelligence: it will be smart enough to deduct dynamically the required sequence of action to address the need of the user, and if it is needing anything from the user to complete the work, it has no shame in asking :) That is a core new AI that IBM Research has been developing and looking to release in the right context and Orchestrate is just that!

In a way, Orchestrate has been through through and designed with some of the key quality of a human worker in mind, at least those that a machine can emulate while the human worker will remain irreplaceable for so much of the more value-add/creative work needed to be done but that we sometime have little time for after all the “busy” work that is creeping into our inbox & to-do lists every day (until we can delegate that though Orchestrate!).

Indeed, the concept of digital worker that Orchestrate introduces can really be seen as a peer you are hiring into your team: in addition to the 3 attributes mentioned above, it also comes with a set of skills, which are essentially a list of tools and activities that one would list on a resume/CV as things that they know how to use/do and can contribute to the team on day one.

After that, like any other new hire, it can be taught new tools & skills so it can get to do things more specific to your company, your team and the role you want to give it along its human peers. It can therefore become more and more senior with time and its human peers will also learn how to work/communicate with it better and better to improve the productivity of the team. So just like with another peer that you get to build a work relationship with over time, value keeps growing, with the one difference is that Orchestrate is not going anywhere so no worry about turn over, the important knowledge it is accumulating will stay with the team!

We would love to hear your thoughts of what Orchestrate could become for you and your team, and how it would transform your work life. Think big! We are, this is a beginning of an exciting journey that we believe will indeed be transformational for the workforce but also ourselves!

We look for your input in this community as well as on our watsonx Orchestrate idea portal where you can feel free to share all the things you would love to see Orchestrate do for you.
