How AI based Incident Remediation can help in achieving DORA compliance

By Eric Cattoir posted Tue July 02, 2024 07:00 AM

Although in the DORA regulation there is a big focus on cyber resiliency of course general resiliency is also an important aspect. In our view IT Automation will play an ever bigger role in keeping systems resilient. More and more also Artificial Intelligence can play a role in optimising this process.

Key in the resiliency is to reduce the number of incidents and also lower the impact of incidents Observability will play a big role in this and the IBM Instana Observability solution can help in assuring this resiliency. Let us explain how a number of new AI based capabilities achieve these targets.

Lowering the Impact of Incidents

Instana uses advanced AI protocols to analyze various data sources like call data, topology, events, and metrics. This thorough analysis allows Instana to accurately identify the probable cause of incidents. By exploring the complexities of the IT environment, Instana helps teams identify problem sources and understand the underlying factors, enabling more effective and lasting solutions.

Reducing the number of Incidents

In addition to this a new capability is the Intelligent Remediation. This can greatly help in reducing the occpurrence of incidents. Based on the analysis of the data related to an incident and previous incident resolutions Instana can suggest a resolution which can ideally be based on an automated script. There is a powerful integration with the Ansible Automation Platform. In certain cases the automation can be used to fully automatically resolve the incident.

Even more advanced is the possibility  to avoid  incidents to happen. With the Instana product comes a collection of Ansible Playbooks which you can import in your Ansible Automation Platform. These playbooks bring a rich knowledge base around a number of technologies like Kubernetes, Elastic Search and Java (https://github.com/instana/intelligent-remediation-ansible/tree/main) This allows Instana to take some preventive measures when predicting upcoming issues. For example when a Kubernetes service requires more resources Instana could increase the numbers of replicas in a replica set.

Over time you can also enhance this Intelligent Remediation with your own customised automations in a similar way. When finding a recurring task you can create  a playbook and the Instana will add this to the knowledge of previous Incidents. In combination with the IBM Watson Code Assistant for Ansible you could even also use AI to create the automation scripts. A textual description of previous similar incidents can be used to generate a number of Ansible tasks to automate the incident resolution.

As can be concluded from the previous new AI capabilities like the Intelligent Remediation implemented by IBM Instana can be key in helping in ensuring DORA compliance. For more information on these features See :
