Community Festival Special Session: Where You Start Depends on Where You Are Now – Use Process Mapping To Find Out

By DAVID Jenness posted Thu November 11, 2021 03:39 PM

One of the most common questions asked by organizations who want to get the benefits of Business Automation, is “Where do I start?”  That’s the topic of a special session for IBM Community Festival on Tuesday, November 16 at 9:00 AM ET. Whether you’re just getting started or you’ve been doing it for a long time, you’ll benefit from seeing how companies can model their current process and begin to visualize an automated one, before investing in a solution.

It’s all well and good to hear stories of companies who are combining AI, Capture, business rules, workflow and robotic process automation, like this case study about PNC Bank or this video from Bank of Montreal, but the fact remains that these are organizations that have been at it a while.

If you’re just beginning your journey to automation as a company or as a department, you would be wise to listen to James Taylor, CEO of Decision Management Solutions, an IBM Business Partner.  James recently appeared in a special conversation about Innovation at the IBM Business Automation Summit, where he said: “You can’t get started until you know where you are.”

He called out some of the tools available to help gauge your current state, including Process Mining, Process Modeling and Design Thinking.  These are three distinct categories, but all three are aligned on solving the problem of helping you decide where to start automating.

                         Mark Ketteman                                                                    Stephanie Wilkerson

On Tuesday, the session “Getting the Best out of Process Mapping With Blueworks Live," will feature IBM’s Mark Ketteman, a Business Automation architect, who will share an introduction to IBM Blueworks Live and show how you can use it to start mapping your processes and identifying good candidates for automation. IBM’s Stephanie Wilkerson will also share a quick introduction to the principles of Design Thinking, a format for process discovery and improvement, which brings all the stakeholders of a process together to collaborate and shape a solution.

Signing up is easy. Just join IBM ExpertTV here and navigate to the Tuesday 9 AM Sessions.  Meanwhile, as a great way to prepare, check out James Taylor’s short talk on how you can “know where you are,” and get started innovating.
