How do you #UseApptio?

Wed November 23, 2016 04:37 PM

All over community we’ve been reading that one of the biggest factors to TBM Success is to keep it simple at first and to #UseApptio as soon as you can, to support something you regularly do. I love the advice one of our experienced community members, Juan Jose Juan José Jarillo gives to a newer member Molly @Molly Meinert  here. Want to see other examples? I’ve been tagging them  as I find them. Search the tag, and feel free to use it. (Oh and Molly might be new to TBMConnect but she’s already started leveraging the Apptio Community brain trust, put her on the "Rising Stars" list :-)

Where are you in the effort to use Apptio to support one of your regular IT processes? Are you working on the first use case or have a few under your belt? Take this quick poll and see the results from others.

[Poll Closed Dec 15, 2016 Results Below]

While we’re talking about technology firsts, it can’t all be financial reviews and budget variance analyses. Let’s add some fun to the discussion. (No offense to our community members -I know you’re out there - who think financial reviews are fun ;-) In the comments below, tells us what your first computer was. I’m looking forward to the responses and extra points if you include an image. Here’s mine. Anyone else have one of these?

We held a team away-day in our local computer museum.  They had some great examples of the technology over the year.  You should have shown this one @Oliver Smith

First Computer was a Compaq (seems appropriate considering I'm working for HP now):

I still have very fond memories of looking up at one of the books that came with it on the bookshelf when I was about 7 called "Basic", I asked my Dad to get it down, since it must have been basic to understand and a book for me.  He said it probably wasn't what I thought it was, but happily gave it to me (which I very soon learned to program in BASIC with).  This was the start of my passion for technology.

We had an Epson computer (and printer!) with the old green and black screen. But we might have had this first? Circa 1986?

Derek, @Derek Puckett this touches on part of that - filmed for community, sitting in too high chairs, in the middle of the lunch area, with blazing stage lights, you know totally natural - conversation we had at TBMC16  If any of it turns out, looking forward to posting it on the home page!

That's definitely the case! It's always so expected that everyone has some form of computer at home, and definitely when going to work.

I can indeed! I can remember in my first part time job, saving up for ages to get myself the iPad 2, had that for years before it started to become a bit obsolete. I can also remember my first phone was a Motorola flip phone, but again, I don't remember the model  I think it's definitely tablets that will be the remembered piece of tech for my generation, as even mobiles were everywhere by the time I got my first one.

Will be very interesting to see how it happens with Apptio and TBM!

Ha! I love it.

One of my favorite things about the Apptio Community is the diversity of our members. Our range of generations and work experience is exemplified in the comments above. Oli, you're early enough in your career that your first computer wasn't a novelty. You don't remember it the same way that I have no clue what my first TV was , it was just a thing I used and everyone had one. A better example for our early career members, is probably tablets. I bet you know what the first tablet was that you used.

I'm confident TBM will become the same way. There's so much that feels novel about it now but in just a few years everyone will look back and say, "Of course." or "Hmm can't remember the first process or review, I supported using Apptio. Everybody just uses it for everything, right?" ;-)

It will be common place tomorrow but the coolest part of it being emerging today is that there's still room for anyone who applies themselves to make significant contributions, to be a thought leader or a respected practitioner of a discipline that will soon be universal.

I can't actually remember much about my first computer, apart from that I had great fun messing around with random games on it, and hearing "You've got mail!" every now and then when my Mum got an email. I think it must have been in about 2004/5, so whatever the standard computer was back then? I then remember switching to playing on a PS2 for a few years, and having my Mum lie about breaking it just before Christmas of 2008 (I was extremely upset when she said she broke it) only to be surprised by a brand new PS3 on Christmas Day and to hear that she actually gave the PS2 away to a family friend who had been badly treated by his Mum, but was now living with his lovely Grandparents.

Sorry I'm going off on a bit of a ramble here.... In summary! Don't remember my first computer as I was quite young when using it, first thing I remember properly using was a Playstation 2, a Playstation 3, and a couple of years ago I built myself a nice gaming computer

Yes! My 64 was exactly the same, except yours looked way more stylish.

Would you believe I have one of those today. It was the first computer my husband bought in college. We dug it out and tried to turn it on a few months ago and fired right up :-)

My first personal computer was the Sinclair spectrum. The interoperability of this thing was amazing. You could plug it to any TV, and any  cassette player could be used to load games. I learned about computing languages (basic), playing games, games piracy, and many more very useful technology concepts.

Thanks for the shoutout, Rhonda!  Our team at UPMC is working hard to get the most out of Apptio for our users.  What we have learned so far has enabled us to present data to our IT group that we had never been able to before TBM.  We have already sparked the interest of our different IT areas and are working towards total cost transparency within our IT organization.  Thanks to everyone who has been so helpful as we get our feet wet in Apptio!

As for technology "firsts," here's a picture of what my first computer looked like- circa 1994 Macintosh.  Much different than what I have today!
