Cloud Services to ATUM Mappings

Tue October 18, 2016 02:41 PM

OVERVIEW

Within Cost Transparency, Apptio has included mappings from cloud provider line items to ATUM IT Resource Towers and Subtowers.  With these mappings, all of your cloud bill line items will map into an ATUM IT Resource Subtower allowing you to:

  1. Analyze various cloud services using a common taxonomy
  2. Automatically allocate cloud costs into the appropriate IT Resource Towers

PROVIDERS COVERED

Cloud service mappings are currently supported for AWS and Azure with the possibility of extension to other providers based on feedback from customers.  You can find the mapping files on community here:

AWS*: AWS Services Mapping

Azure: Azure Services Mapping

*AWS mapping file updates are also available by using the Datalink AWS connector.  Azure updates via Datalink will be available in a future Datalink release.

MAPPING UPDATES

Cloud providers are consistently and rapidly updating their service offerings and, as a result, the mappings created and maintained by Apptio can become out of date.  To address this dynamic environment, Apptio will be updating the mapping files on a monthly cadence, with a new version of the mapping files to be released each month.  If you do encounter mapping gaps, there are a couple courses of action:

  1. Let us know - provide Apptio with a list of your mapping gaps.  You may email the gaps to cloudmapping@apptio.com and we will do our best to fill the gaps identified in the next mapping update release.  Please, include the following information for those Cloud Service Provider line items where the Subtower field is blank:
    • Provider
    • Product
    • Item
    • Procedure
    • Cost (optional, but helpful to understand impact of the gaps)
  2. Fill the gaps yourself.  You can extend the existing mappings to fill gaps (or overwrite existing mappings with your own) by creating  a mapping file and appending it to the Cloud Service Provider Lookup Master Data dataset.  More detailed instructions are available in the Cost Transparency Cloud Services Configuration Guide here: Cost Transparency Cloud Services Configuration Guide or here for earlier versions of CT: Cost Transparency Cloud Services Configuration Guide (R11.8.1.3 and earlier).

What's the status on creating a mapping for v3?

I noticed Datalink doesn't offer an "ATUM 3.0" option for AWS Reference Data. :-(

Great, thanks for confirming Randy, could find anything which stated this so thought it would be easier to just ask

Hi Julie - thanks for the question and for your continuing contribution to community.  The cloud mapping files cover both ATUM 1 and ATUM 2.  The implementation of ATUM 1 vs ATUM 2 does differ between AWS and Azure:

  • AWS mappings are implemented through separate files, one for ATUM 1 and one for ATUM 2 (both included in the zip file downloadable from Community).
  • Azure mappings are implemented through a single file containing separate columns for ATUM 1 and ATUM 2.

Let me know if you have additional questions...

Thanks,

Randy

@Randall Tennant - are the service mappings going to be updated in line with AUM v2 or are they to remain as is?
