Hi I have been build business dimensions to allocate data to business clusters to facilitate reporting in Apptio Cloudability but I stuck on how to deal with Reservations and Azure Plans as my current filter appears to be excluding them even though they should be associated with the resources included in the filter.

Use case for Business Dimensions

We are creating a reporting structure based on the company setup to allow for users of Cloudability to review cost for resource that they are responsible for.  We would like to also be able to use a single set of dashboards filtered by views that use the business dimensions.

Example

Statement

Global Cost Center Equals 20413 AND

Global Company Code Equals 14 or

Global Company Code Equals 15 or

Global Company Code Equals 16 or

Global Company Code Equals 19 or

Global Company Code Equals 20 or

Global Company Code Equals 49 or

Global Company Code Equals 52 or

Global Company Code Equals 81 or

Global Company Code Equals 89 or

Global Company Code Equals 106

Value Cluster West

View is created to filter on Business Dimension cluster = Cluster West

Issue when this view is applied all of the following metrics are no longer available.

·         On Demand Hour vs Reserved Hours

·         Percentage Reservation coverage

·         One time cost

This means that a large number of the predefined dashboards give miss leading information as they show all these metrics as zero.

If you add all reservations and Azure Plans into the filter it reports all cost of the entire tenant and not just Cluster West.  As the reservations are not taggable and are not always used by the same VM I can’t see a sensible way of ensuring this information is included in the views.

Are you using Cost (Amortized) in your reporting? We use business mappings extensively, but remember that the Reservation cash spend is not actually a consumption transaction. It's a prepayment for the future consumption which then gets repriced by the Azure billing engine to zero in the Cost (Total) aka cash cost management feed. I suspect if you look at the reporting you *are* getting the business mappings applied to the VM consumption covered by the reservations, but the Cost (Total) associated with the consumption will show as $0.00. If you use Cost (Amortized) instead you'll find that the consumption still gets business mappings applied, but the Cost (Amortized) value shown will be the effective price under the reservation. Hope this makes sense.

Also, if you're not using Cost (Amortized) you should be, for this very reason. Otherwise you'll see any consumption of reservations and prepurchases (like Databricks prepurchases for example) as costing you zero, when in reality you want to know what the effective price is for that consumption at the time it occurs - and that's what you'll see with Cost (Amortized). Very few people in most organizations are going to care that the up-front or monthly cost of a reservation or prepurchase happened on a particular day. But they are going to care about the consumption that uses those reservations/prepurchases that happens continuously throughout a given reporting period.
