Object Cost Allocation Fallout in Tabular Report

  • 1.  Object Cost Allocation Fallout in Tabular Report

    Hi,

I would like to create a summary table report, showing the 'fallout' (under/over allocation) of cost from each of the objects in Apptio . The ultimate aim is to show in a table month on month changes (hopefully cost fallout reductions) as we improve our allocations.

I am struggling to find/calculate the fallout values. Has anyone attempted something like this before? and can you give me pointers as to how to find/calculate the values? It think it should be possible as Apptio is able to show the values in the Sankey diagrams, so the data must exist somewhere to do this, I just cant seem to find it!

    Any help greatly appreciated,

    Chris

I was going to point you to this, Validation Helper , but then you said 'Sankey' so you're in R12 and not R11.  Copying in @Chris Davidson to see if he's heard of if/when that particular table/view will be available for R12 - so far I've heard it's not there, but maybe in a future release. ?

Update, 4/29/24: The above referenced 'Validation Helper' is on the old site, so that link no longer works.  Could potentially use this report if looking for something similar.

    Hi Jenny,

Just had a look at the Validation Helper which I have now created and will use this during my reviews

I thought I share my monthly 'Fallout report' which I constantly use to ensure costs are flowing.

Very Nice!  Is this using R12?  If so, I'm saving for when we migrate!  Do you also have one that shows by month over month in one view?

    Hi Jenny,

    My report is using R11

I do not have a month over month as you can't remove or add any of columns like normal reports.

    Hi Jenny,

Yes you are correct and apologies, as I should have made it clear in my original post - I am on R12, and I did look at your informative post 'Validation Helper', which was great for R11.

I think I have a partial answer... I have found the following report (Data Quality - Summary) in R12 which seems to give me the values I am after, however I still don't get how I could leverage the data in my own bespoke report. I have tried to look at the data path to see if that can give me some pointers to the data, but data paths don't make a great deal of sense to me.

    Any thoughts?

We can check out the Data Quality - Summary report, right-click the Total Unallocated by Modeled Metric (Cost) table border > Copy to clipboard. Then we can paste the copied table to any other report if needed.

After we paste the table, consider also:

Right-click table header row > Show/hide columns > Unit: Check box.

Now we see all rows from all objects in one table.

Filter the table by % Unallocated > 0 to show just the fallout.

Each model metric also comes with its own fallout table showing the same information as the example above.

    For example:

(left) Project explorer > Metrics > Cost.

    (top center menu) > Unallocated.

    Hi Christopher,

Thank you for the information, however this still doesn't address my main problem. The problem is that I want to create my own bespoke report using the Unallocated data. In fact due to the nature of our implementation I want to break down the unallocated costs by a value that is in all our objects. Our implementation is essentially 11 smaller companies rolled into one cost model, with an identifier (Source field) that indicates the Company or Source of the data, this exists in all the Master Data Objects, Cost Source, Labor, Vendor etc. I would like to generate a table that breaks down the object fallout by the 'Source'. Are you able to provide any pointers on how I could do this?

    Thanks,

    Chris

I don't know of a way to instruct Apptio to treat all same-named columns (in different tables) the same.

    For example, you might have:

    Cost Source Master Data.Source

    Labor Master Data.Source

    Vendor Master Data.Source

...but Apptio will treat these three Source columns as different columns, despite their identical names.

We can generate one table per object (which can include the unallocated cost and the Source value), but I don't see a straightforward way to combine all the details you seek within a single overall table.

    Apptio.

At least let me export the Unallocated table in the model!
