Announcing IBM Edge Application Manager 4.3.0

IBM Edge Application Manager (IEAM) formerly IBM Edge Computing Manager, offers a powerful solution for issues that require enterprise computing power at the edge of the cloud, closer to where data is created and where actions need to be taken.

 New solutions include:

  • Integrated Secrets Manager
  • Internal TLS
  • Protect model files in the Model Management System (MMS)
  • Air Gap installation instructions
  • Expanded Ubuntu and RHEL support




Integrated Secrets Manager


Services deployed to the edge often require access to cloud services, which means authentication must be performed to use the cloud service. Integrated Secrets Manager enhances IEAM to provide a secure mechanism that lets credentials be stored, transported, and managed without exposing them within metadata (for example, service definitions and policies) or to other users in the system who should not have access to the secure information.

Internal TLS

Optionally, enable TLS for all internal API calls within the IEAM Management Hub.

Protect model files in MMS


IEAM MMS provides management and deployment of Machine Learning (ML) models to edge devices, using the same autonomous intent-based policy mechanism used to deploy application containers. ML models are essentially very large data objects containing the details of how an inference engine should process data that it receives. MMS object data could be compromised during upload or download by a cybersecurity adversary somewhere in the network. To help ensure the integrity of ML models under MMS management, MMS is enhanced to digitally sign and verify every ML model that is uploaded to the MMS and deployed to edge nodes

Air Gap installation instructions


Air Gap solution provides detailed instructions on how to install an air gap IEAM Management Hub. Included are links to Red Hat for instructions on building an air gap edge cluster.

Expanded Ubuntu and RHEL support

Agent support on Ubuntu 20.04.2 and 18.04; RHEL support on 8.2 and 8.3.


IEAM solutions


  • Autonomous management to handle the scale, variability, and rate of change of edge deployment environments that traditional management solutions were not designed for. With the IEAM autonomous management capabilities, negotiation, agreement, execution, and on-going validation of workload management tasks are handled directly between IEAM and edge endpoints (servers, clusters, and devices) using a lightweight Edge agent. These actions are based on administrator intent, but without administrator intervention, even during new edge endpoint onboarding. IEAM autonomous management capabilities are specifically designed to address the scale, variability, and rate of change of edge deployment topologies. Built on Red Hat OpenShift, IEAM offers client flexibility and choice as the cornerstone of your edge strategy.
  • Edge computing for edge clusters:
    • Kubernetes-enabled workload orchestration for elastic scale and continuous operations
  • Edge computing for edge devices:
    • Multitenancy and workload isolation at the device
    • Autonomous policy-driven service (workload) placement
    • Model and version management sync service from the cloud to the edge
  • Scalability. IEAM scales to a maximum of 40,000 devices, which enables businesses to scale their solutions to address their computing needs.
  • Support for Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4.6, including the management hub installation. IEAM supports one of the leading open platforms with an enterprise solution for the edge.
  • Support for Debian OS, an operating system that uses the Linux kernel and is composed of open-source software.
  • Agent installation of SSH. IEAM enables easier deployment of software across thousands of devices.
