IBM Instana Observability Self-Hosted 1.0.233 Now Available

By PATRICK BUTLER posted Tue September 27, 2022 04:20 AM

IBM Instana Observability Self-Hosted releases a new version — version 1.0.233 — today, September 27, 2022.

This latest release delivers enhancements and additional coverage from what was delivered with version 1.0.231. In this release, you can directly use Instana packages for installation and deployment. For detailed instructions, see the Instructions.pdf file, which you can download from Passport Advantage.

Main features now available to IBM clients in the new release:

New environment variable for logging in .NET and .NET Core

  • Instana now has a new environment variable INSTANA_LOG_LEVEL_CAPTURE for .Net and .Net Core to prevent creating spans for logs with lower level than the one set. For more information, see Monitoring .NET Core and Monitoring .NET.

Additional OpenTelemetry Components for Node.js

Table space utilities metrics for IBM Db2LUW sensor now supports auto-resize and events related to it

  • Table space utilities metrics has an additional metric autoResize. You can now set events based on whether the auto resize is enabled or not. This event can be created on the Create new Event page on UI.

Application metrics: new API endpoint

  • A new API endpoint /api/application-monitoring/v2/metrics is now available. You can use this endpoint to get call metrics, which can be filtered by a tag filter expression. For more information, see API documentation.

Sensor improvements:

Google Cloud Platform (GCP) sensor

  • Google Cloud Platform (GCP) sensor generates Instana monitoring events in case of live migration event notices on Google Compute Engine (GCE).

IBM MQ Sensor

  • Upgraded IBM MQ Client package to 9.3.0.0 to fix the security issue CVE-2022–22321.

IBM ACE Sensor

  • Added more logs of info level to avoid misleading users.

IBM i sensor

  • Added the custom event for running job status.
  • Added wild card support for Active Jobs that are running less than the specified threshold value.
  • Fixed ASP State Grid issues by adding AVAILABLE and FAILED status values of AspState that are missing previously.

Node.js Tracer

  • Added support for AWS Lambda architecture type arm64.

Postgresql sensor

  • In addition to the postgresql.conf file, Postgresql sensor is now able to parse the postgresql.auto.conf file that contains the provided settings with the ALTER SYSTEM command, which overrides the contents of the postgresql.conf file.

Python sensor

  • Version 2.0.0 of python-sensor drops support for all the Python runtimes that have already reached end-of-life status at the Python Software Foundation. This means that any runtime earlier than version 3.7 is not supported by 2.0.0. Users of legacy runtimes need to bind instana in requirements.txt manually to the legacy 1.x track.
  • Version 2.0.0 of python-sensor drops support for the following end-of-life frameworks:
  • suds-jurko
  • webapp2
  • asynqp
  • For more information about the current support matrix, see the supported versions page.

Other improvements:

Support for dynamic custom payload for Website Smart Alerts

Azure Functions .NET support

  • The Span preview page for Azure Functions in Analytics on Instana UI is updated by adding missing Endpoint information and expanding span data with Runtime and Method Name. The metric list in the Azure Functions Application page in Infrastructure is also updated. Metrics FunctionExecutionUnits and FunctionExecutionCount are deleted because they are not supported by the latest Azure Application Insights version.

Improved JBoss data collection

  • Added regex configuration for more precise deployments monitoring. For more information, see Monitoring JBoss AS.

Improved display of metrics near present time

  • Metrics are near real-time and are aggregated from agents. To avoid displaying potentially incomplete metrics, requests for present or live data are delayed by 10s in charts.

Show decimal places for latencies in the grouped results of traces and call analytics

  • Added decimal places for latencies in the grouped results up to two decimal places for small numbers, such as 0.34, 2.69. And for larger numbers, less decimal places are shown, such as 12.1, 30.1. If the value is in the hundreds or more, no decimal places are shown.

Kafka header migration

  • Starting from October 2022, Instana tracers move to a new trace correlation header format for Kafka messages. No action on your part is needed. For more information, see Kafka Header Migration.

Application Perspective dashboard performance improvement

  • The performance of the Application Perspective dashboard over a larger timeframe is improved when the metric granularity is 4h, 6h or higher.

Improved Erroneous section of faceted search component in calls and traces analytics

  • The Only erroneous option is displayed in the Erroneous faceted search in calls and traces analytics even though the tag suggestions call returns 0 matches.

For additional features, improvements, and fixes made to the enterprise observability platform and automated Application Performance Monitoring solution, see the release notes at https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/instana-observability/current?topic=notes-self-hosted-premises.
