  • 1.  Stuck on My Data Analyst Journey: What Should I Do?

    Posted Thu November 28, 2024 10:57 AM

Hi! I am passionate about data science and aspire to become a data analyst. However, it seems that the job market offers very few opportunities for junior data analysts, especially at the end of the year like now.

Let me introduce myself a bit: last year, I graduated from the Faculty of Data Science, at a prestigious university, where I achieved the highest GPA in my major. I have interned at two large companies. Despite this, I still haven't been able to secure a Data Analyst position, whether at a big or small company. I have attended quite a few interviews, but none have resulted in an offer.

I am feeling very confused and worried because I am financially constrained and feel like I have lost my sense of direction. This period has been extremely difficult for me, and I don't know what to do.

If anyone with experience could offer me some advice, I would greatly appreciate it. What should I do during this time?

    Thank you very much!

After you find out that you were not accepted, you may want to ask "  what was your major factor in not selecting me

Another question you may ask " what can I do to improve my chances of being hired the next time I interview with a company"

Also look for another position below an analyst, then work your way up to that position, example: programmer

    A couple questions & suggestions:

Were you asking over and above what the salary at your experience level?

Do you have any on the job experience?

Have you asked who interviewed you how they made their decision? ( you may or may not get an answer)

Have you thought of applying for a lower level position then work your way up?

Personal hygiene which some forget can determine if they hire you over another.

Have you taken some soft skill courses?   Are you a team player?

Apparently your resume is fine if you were getting interviews.

Are you Certified as an IBM Analyst ? If not take the courses, get all the Certifications.

Getting a job is a job, winners never quit and quitters never win, keep on applying, keep on learning

These are all things that are considered plus more, keep on learning, expand your education.

It takes time to for you to understand your job market with regards to "What employers are looking for" and "how you fit in with your skills".   Be patient. Keep applying. Refine your communication skills too as part of soft skills required.  There are plenty of jobs in Data science. Meanwhile take up some part time jobs for financial constraints. Do some part time IT gigs.  Create your own simple website with minimal cost. Take up a huge problem or concern in any industry or community  and then show case the problems and solutions using data science and analytics on your own website. Monetize it.  Show case it to your future employers as well.   It is just a matter of time. Best wishes.

Hi,  How is your job search going so far.  Hope you have been successful. Data analysts are in great demand in Engineering companies in the quality function too. You should also be able to show case some work using public datasets for data analysis and data science projects as pet projects. All these projects are recognised. The reason why I am saying this, is because in the past i have created and done many data projects using public datasets.  I have done many data analysis projects and used my own site to showcase data science and analysis projects. This was about 6 years ago. I leant data science and analysis though IBM certification in Coursera. All these were very helpful.
