  • 1.  SPSS statistics 27.0.1.0 in Linux (Debian 12 LTS) = performance issues

    Posted 8 days ago

    Dear Community

I am running SPSS Statistics v 27 in a high-performance linux box (Debian 12 LTS). There are about 60 users connecting to this server.  They connect remotely and access SPSS from the graphical desktop environment.  As soon as they open SPSS,  the desktop menu on top disappears, SPSS windows and panes can only be minimized or maximised,  even if the linux system menu is seen they can't logout as clicking on 'logout' is unresponsive.

I tested and reproduced this issue at the server terminal itself to rule out other causes. I never install fixpacks as I dont have direct support contract with IBM as we deal only with Version1 for licensing.  I also made sure there aren't multiple spss processes running in the background.

When the users do not access SPSS , things are ok, no problem at all. So it appears SPSS is causing the system to freeze. Is this a stable version? Should I upgrade to version 30? Or Is there a fixpack / workaround?  Your advise will be hugely helpful.

    Thank you

    Siva P

    Hi @Siva Padmanabhan
Debian was never a supported linux distribution for this version of SPSS Statistics.  From your description, it sounds like you are having trouble with the GNOME user interface rendering the Statistics interface.

Also, your particular deployment with the client deployed to a server and then multiple end user sessions launching that same set of binaries was never fully and formally tested.  Again from your description it seems like your user sessions are fully invoking the complete Statistics graphical user interface and backend.  Ultimately, this likely will consume all available resources.  Have your tried virtualizing your Statistics 27.0.1.0 (linux) clients and licensing them via the IBM SPSS Concurrent license manager and Tools?  Rather than having multiple users competing for literally the same client, send each user to their own VM.

I would have liked to have seen  all of these questions researched  and expanded upon.  But as you know, IBM suspended development of SPSS Statistics on Linux.  Version 27.0.1.0 was the last release.  You might try deploying to one of the supported linux distributions contemporary with when IBM SPSS Statistics 27.0.1.0 was released.

See the IBM Software Product Compatibility Report for IBM SPSS Statistics 27.0.1.0 for the supported platforms for this version.
