  • 1.  SPSS Client error; Java VM not found

    Posted Thu May 25, 2023 11:17 AM

University of Alabama at Birmingham as a site license for SPSS 29. Upon installing SPSS 29, SPSS runs for the day, but at night, when the computer automatically updates, I get the following error messages 1) Jave VM not found, then after hitting OK 6 times, 2) Not enough memory for Java.

We have uninstalled and reinstalled SPSS several times, including in "Diagnostic Startup" mode. We have updated Java on several occasions. Our college IT department is at a loss. We have tried a couple of google fixes, but alas... every morning the errors return.

    Hi @Chris Biga

A couple things in your description have me wondering:

    - Are you installing Statistics 29.0.0.0 or 29.0.1.0.  The splash screen or "Help -> About" will tell you.  The latest release is Statistics 29.0.1.0 (171) and is available from Fix Central as a stand alone modification release.  See the Download document.

    - Make sure on your attempts to do a clean re-install you remove:
The installation directory ('C:\Program Files\IBM\SPSS Statistics')
The user preferences in the Windows Registry (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JavaSoft\Prefs\com\ibm\/S/P/S/S\/Statistics)
The user virtual environment ('%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\IBM\SPSS Statistics')

    - You indicate that you have "... updated Java on several occasions".  IBM SPSS Statistics ships with its own JRE instance ('C:\Program Files\IBM\SPSS Statistics\JRE').  You should not be updating this subdirectory (unless directed to do so by an Interim Fix on IBM Fix Central).  IBM SPSS Statistics should be using this 'internal' version of Java, and whatever other Java you have installed should not be interfering.   However, you might check your %PATH% environment variable and make sure the one for IBM SPSS Statistics is the first one (among SPSS Statistics instances) in the list.

    I hope this helps!

    David,

Thank you for your insight!  We went 1 step futher and re-imaged my desktop.  We Installed 29.0.1.0.  And again, SPSS will work for 1 day, then at the end of the night when UAB does it's nightly update, by morning I get an SPSS Client error.  Good news I'm only getting the "Not enough membory for a Java maximum heap of 256M."...

    Any thoughts?

    Thank you!

    Hi Chris,

What is happening as part of the UAB nightly update?

    • Are permissions changed in the SPSS Statistics install path?
    • Are environment variables altered?

    • Are registry settings under the user profiles being altered or deleted?

If this is happening for all users of IBM SPSS Statistics at UAB, this seems like the perfect time for UAB open a Support case and get the problem identified and resolved.

I think we figured it out (I hope).  Tomorrow's update will be the test.

We found that reminiscent of SPSS 28 on the University (my) OneDrive system, so when the system updated, it pulled from these files...

    I'll let you know tomorrow......

Thank you for your voice; just having you offer suggestions got our IT person thinking out of his comfort zone.

Howdy. We Started rolling out 29.0.1.0 and have been having the same issue. WE thought it was or antivirus at first but doesn't appear to be the problem. Installing it on a new machine that's just been imaged still causes the JRE fold to disappear. We are still looking for a solution. Thank you for letting us know we aren't the only ones. :)

We figured it out. We had the older version being pushed out via SCCM. After the app was updated to 29 SCCM detected that 28 was no longer installed but was set to required. The installer would error out but not before removing the JRE folder. After removing the required install for older versions we stopped having any issues.
