SPSS 29.0.1.1 does not work with the release version of Sonoma

  • 1.  SPSS 29.0.1.1 does not work with the release version of Sonoma

    Posted Tue September 26, 2023 01:47 PM

    Starting a new thread here:

Sonoma is now released and no longer in beta -- but our license-server-configured version will not launch correctly.

What is the expectation for a release that will function on Sonoma now that it's actually released to the public?

There is no history of SPSS ever releasing a fix for a full point upgrade of MacOS. This goes back to before IBM bought it.
The fix will be SPSS 30.

I have a serious issue with IBM. They knew the SPSS and Sonoma compatibility was an issue in July 2023 but did not send out alerts to students at my university until September 2023, AFTER we had updated to the the full release of Sonoma. Now, in the middle of my course SPSS is useless. Very poor show there IBM. I think they are morally and ethically obligated to brin release SPSS 30, asap. Not wait until December.

I have the same problem. After installing macOS Sonoma (14.0), SPSS (27.0.1.0) does not work. When I run SPSS a popup appears: Server Login: Local computer. You can click on add, search, cancel and ok, but nothing happens.
I have tried reinstalling SPSS, but does not work. So, I installed the same SPSS version  on my girlfriend's mac which is upgraded to macOS Ventura (13.6), and it works normally there.

I also followed some online guides, including the one proposed by IBM, but nothing. It's a compatibility problem and I don't understand why, when they knew that macOS Sonoma would be released soon and the beta has been available to developers for a while.

It looks like we might have to set up a dual-boot situation on our computers until IBM gets around to fixing this. In the meantime, I have been telling people to NOT upgrade to to Sonoma.

Here is a good to have a dual-boot with Sonoma and Ventura, for example: https://macpaw.com/how-to/dual-boot-two-macos?campaign=cmmx_search_dsa_ww_en&ci=20162564605&adgroupid=152187999551&adpos=&ck=&targetid=dsa-2063388591100&match=&gnetwork=g&creative=659143546295&placement=&placecat=&accname=cmm&gclid=CjwKCAjwyNSoBhA9EiwA5aYlb67ii8OuWORSY-52gyW1hj8aFy1z3FsfQ4uUDH63jllK0GqSTfuK8xoC_1YQAvD_BwE

same issue with Sonoma, I don't know if its about intel silicone or apple silicone but seems to be there is no solution for this problem right now. It's really surprising that in 2023 we still have those kind of problems, and obviously it's not some kind of entertainment software, if a user couldn't use the software that means he/she wouldn't able to do his job.

I think most used the installer created by Christian Buerli. Look for his post. There isn't much to be gained by videoing it. It is just an installer that works like any other installer. It probably does require the files to be in the expected locations though. It really isn't a good idea to move them around.

I'd strongly recommend either moving your installation back to the correct folders or just delete it and reinstall and then apply the patch.

Hey, here's a video recording of me applying the fix in two parts (the file was too big to upload so I trimmed a chunk of it out) - if you can see the titles, play the one called 'spss_sonoma_fix-1' first, then the one ending in -2. If there are any issues with the videos, here's a step-by-step of what I did:

    1. make sure you have SPSS installed and have the interim fix that Kennia linked in your downloads folder.
    2. note the name of the file that needs replacing: it's libplatdep.dylib
    3. in your applications folder, right click on SPSS Statistics, then go to the path specified in the interim fix's Readme file (/Applications/IBM SPSS Statistics/SPSS Statistics.app/Contents/lib/libplatdep.dylib) - no need to open it
    4. copy this file to another location, such as your desktop
    5. go into your downloads and grab the file of the same name that you downloaded in step 1
    6. put it in the Contents/lib folder. you'll get a warning about there being an older file with the same name - replace it, you copied the older file to your desktop in case anything went wrong
    7. launch SPSS and cross your fingers that it worked (it did for me)! Good luck :)

    Hello Everyone,

Here is the information that I received from the Product Management team:

    Dear IBM SPSS Statistics Community,

Apple released macOS 14.0 (Sonoma) on September 26th, 2023. The SPSS Statistics Development team is actively testing this release of macOS with our IBM SPSS Statistics products. Adding macOS 14.0 (Sonoma) as one of our supported platforms is a high priority item and an interim fix is estimated to be delivered on Friday, October 13th, 2023.

Previously we have endeavoured to always provide patched downloads available for the latest On-Prem and Subscription version, enabling users to simply refresh the latest version via a download. In the future we will institute additional safeguards to ensure that IBM SPSS Statistics will be tested against the beta version of new major MacOS updates to ensure that Statistics will be ready when the official MacOS updates are released.

Is there a patch for spss 28? Why does it only fix 29. our school only purchased version 28. why not fix past versions if it fixes 29? Is the logic difficult? We can't just use the latest version like the big companies.

I have SPSS 27, which was provided by my university, and I was able to fix the issue using the file provided by Christian (reply n.43).

     Here's a step-by-step of how I applied the fix:

    • Download the pkg provided by Christian (SPSS 29.0.x Sonoma Fix.pkg)
    • Install it.
    • Open application folder, you should find two folders: one is your SPSS application (mine is called IBM SPSS Statistics 27), and the other is the folder containing the fixer (it should be named IBM SPSS Statistics).
    • Open the second folder. You'll find an application named 'SPSS Statistics' with no icon.
    • Right-click on that file and select 'Show package contents.'
    • A new folder, 'Contents,' will open.
    • Inside 'Contents,' open the 'lib' folder, where you'll find the file 'libplatdep.dylib.' Keep this folder opened.
    • Open the application folder, go to the folder with the SPSS application (mine is called IBM SPSS Statistics 27), and open it.
    • Right-click on the 'SPSS Statistics' app.
    • Select 'Show package contents.'
    • Open the 'Contents' folder and then open the 'lib' folder.
    • Move here the file 'libplatdep.dylib'
    • You will be asked if you want to replace the existing file; click 'Replace.'
    • Then close all the folders.
    • Go to application folder and delete only the folder with the fixer.
    • Run SPSS, and everything should be okay!

Steve, I found and tested the instructions posted in this forum: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/458588/ibm-spss-statistics-28-fails-to-open-in-macos-12-monterrey on Sonoma 14 and SPSS 29.0.1.0

They were originally meant for Monterrey, but they work on Sonoma too.

So if anybody has a crash upon launch, like me, those will do.

Hopefully, this will help the developers' team to figure out the problem.

    Hi @R S,

The  Stack Exchange and SPSS Statistics Community posts you reference address an issue with the executing user profile not having sufficient permission to run Statistics.  These steps seem like a long way to go to workaround an issue rather than resolving it.  In any case, this seems like a problem that is independent of the issues related to running IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0.1.0 on macOS 14.0 (Sonoma).

If you are still experiencing this issue, please start a new thread, or better still, open a Support Case and let's dig into the specifics of your situation.

When I did this fixes from IBM for the new Mac OS Sonoma, kept having the SPSS program disappear within seconds of opening it.   After a long help session with Apole Care, we discovered that I needed to create a second new User Profile for me to use when running SPSS V29.  Now that works fine, but I need have my SPSS related data files etc on an external hard drive or USB for the new user profile to access them.

I don't know why my previous response to this post doesn't show so I'm trying again. I also couldn't launch SPSS 29 on Mac OS Sonoma despite have replaced the libplatdep.dylib file. The program crashes immediately upon start. One of the respective crash reports is enclosed. The solution proposed by R S works for me partially, in the sense that I can run the program directly from the command line, although it wouldn't close cleanly. Much looking for a solution to this mess.

Same issue here. The fix pack (replacing libplatdep.dylib) has not changed the problem at all.

My IT department finally got V28 to work on my Mac Sonoma - create a new Administrator - and simply download SPSS - copy the patch to the lib folder and it works. Yes it's a massive pain having to switch between two accounts, but it does work. IT couldn't figure out why that was on what was on my profile that was stopping SPSS from being recognised. But honestly, I don't care.

    I don't know if this will work on V29 - it's worth a go!

This is a workaround and not a solution. I had a long video call with IBM's David Dwyer, during which we jointly tried to figure out why SPSS crashes on my system. Although he really gave his best, we failed, so he suggested to forward a description of my situation to his developer team. Unfortunately, I haven't heard from him since…

    Hi @Robert Csapo,

The behavior you and I discussed in Webex was related to your macOS user profile.  Recall we got your Statistics Subscription up and running  (albeit under a new Admin user profile) after applying the Sonoma interim fix..

    Hi everybody,

It appears that version 29.0.2 is finally working on my Mac running OS Sonoma (14.1.2). So far, I was able to run the program from the command line (sudo -b /Applications/IBM\ SPSS\ Statistics/SPSS\ Statistics.app/Contents/MacOS/stats) but the program refused to start from the graphical user interface and couldn't be properly shut down. Here's what I now did:

    1. Trash directory containing IBM SPSS 29.0.1.2 and clear trash
    2. Run the clean script available here: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/522345
    3. Download and install SPSS 29.0.2 from here: https://www.ibm.com/support/fixcentral/swg/selectFixes?parent=SPSS&product=ibm/Information+Management/SPSS+Statistics&release=29.0.1.1&platform=Mac+OSX&function=all
    4. On my system, the freshly installed version of SPSS still failed to start (it got stuck upon showing the start screen, which then disappeared after a couple of seconds). So, without much hope, I ran the command to repair user permissions once more:

      diskutil resetUserPermissions / `id -u`

    5. Voilà, to my great surprise, SPSS finally starts alright

Thanks everybody, and particularly David Dwyer, for the support!
