SPSS 29 - Apple Silicon?

  • 1.  SPSS 29 - Apple Silicon?

    Posted Thu September 15, 2022 10:06 AM
Hi, I saw that SPSS 29 is now available but in reading the "what's new" page (SPSS Statistics) I didn't see any mention of a native version for Apple Silicon. Does anyone know when that might be available?

    Thank you!

    Hi, Irwin.

We've done research on Apple Silicon and it's on our radar, but no official timeline for release at this point. Internally, we are still waiting on a 3rd party dependency to produce an Apple Silicon native: GSKit, an IBM component we use for encrypting data files and SSL connections to Stats Servers, is not yet Apple Silicon native.  It needs to be native.

Hi, Rick.  I'm an IT professional at a college, and was just installing SPSS on an M1 MacBook Air; that led me to do some Googling to find out the Apple Silicon status of SPSS and I found this thread.

It's six months later; do we have any update regarding the status of GSKit recompilation?  Or do we know if SPSS 30 will be Apple Silicon native?

    Thanks,

    Adam Hauerwas

    Hi. From management:

"GSKit is not updated for Apple Silicon at this time but we are tracking it.  No ETA for an Apple Silicon native SPSS Statistics but it is on our roadmap."

Hi @Rick Marcantonio has anything moved here? Our team is loosing patience and seriously considering switching to R, which has had native Apple Silicon version of their apps available for a long time…

2025 now, so I'd like to bump this question & thread as well please. I'm surprised IBM's own security tool GSKit hasn't been updated yet either. 2025 is when everyone starts wondering just when will Apple stop supporting Intel Macs, and therefore how much longer after that will they stop providing Rosetta for compatibility with Intel based macOS apps.

Hi @Richard Smith, thanks for bringing this back up. We are aware of the issue and as your question implied, we have been at least partially hamstrung on this by the need to acquire versions of each IBM and third party binary that support Apple Silicon (the M* chipsets). We are almost there, however one challenge is that IBM will not be supporting a JRE that can be used in a Universal Binary. Therefore we will either support a Universal Binary or two separate versions for MacOS, one for Apple Silicon and one for Intel. Stay tuned - we have not forgotten about this issue and are actively working on it.

    Best regards,

Hi @Curtis Browning, thank you for weighing in two months ago.  It's now two years since I posted on this thread though, and over four years since Apple released the M1 Mac Mini.

I understand that you have dependencies, and I "get" that IBM may not be supporting a Universal Binary JRE (therefore requiring separate downloads for different chipsets).  But can we at least get a timeline or an anticipated release date?  Our organization is actively phasing out Intel-based Macintoshes (due to Apple's planned obsolescence and wanting to stay current with MacOS), and it's irritating to know that code which my faculty depend on is "slower than it should be" on brand-new hardware.

    Thanks,

Hi @Adam Hauerwas, thanks for your message. We are still trying to work out a solution for M1 chipsets that won't force us to drop all support for Mac hardware using Intel chips. The basic problem is that although code compiled for Intel runs on M1, the reverse is not true. Since we cannot readily make a universal binary due to the JRE issue you noted above, that leaves us with just three options:

    1. Create two versions of SPSS Statistics on MacOS, one for Intel chips and one for M1 chips. That could get expensive to support, but we understand the need to get off of a pure Intel solution and are weighing this option.
    2. Create a universal binary that does not include the JRE and add special loading code in C++ that will select the correct JRE based upon hardware and pass that information to the Stats loader code. This approach hasn't been vetted yet however and we are not certain it will work.
    3. Drop all support for Intel based Macintosh hardware. That would be a hardship for many users (although less than previously), and is the least attractive of the options we face.

We will be making a decision on this fairly soon, but I can say that any solution will necessarily need to be after version 31 ships in June of this year. Thank you for your patience on this topic - we know that it is an increasingly urgent issue and are working on a solution.

    Best regards,

    Curtis

    Curtis,

I know of a number of other softwares where there are different installers.  One labeled Intel and the other labeled for ARM processors.

    Thanks
