AI is NOT going to revolutionize the health care industry. Nothing is. Healthcare is a HIGH-RISK, MISSION CRITICAL environment, that involves LOSS of LIFE. Because of this, testing for medical treatments, medical devices, and medical systems is robust, systems must be deterministic, and fail-safe systems need to be in place. With these constraints, ANY change to the industry is going to be measured, and EVOLUTIONARY (not revolutionary).
AI (and automation in general) can provide great benefits in this space, but they all need to be either: 1) fully deterministic (which AI is NOT), or 2) supervised with human intelligence in the loop.
I know that we're in the middle of a giant AI hype cycle, and people are making money off of the hype. I'm not anti-AI, or afraid of an AGI taking over the world. It's just that the hype has gotten out of hand.
AI is currently having an impact here. When you look at the REAL and ACTUAL use cases where AI provides value today, it is in ways that are quite impactful, that many of us take for granted. Speech services allow assistants and health workers to more easily record and review patient information while working with the patient. That is a huge benefit - and one you can see used in a medical setting today. Some AI systems will review images - as a sort of built in "second opinion" (but never just on their own). AI systems are used to detect trends in disease spread and frequency - useful for detecting and reacting to outbreaks of disease. These are all powerful impacts - you just need to strip away the hype and appreciate the actual impacts that you see today.
