hello, i'm running SPSS 29.0.0.0 and MacOS Ventura 13.1. SPSS is crashing frequently for me when i'm editing a syntax file. Is anyone else seeing similar? Any fixes on the way?

Hi. We are not aware of any such problem.

Please try starting SPSS from a terminal window and see if you can replicate the crash. The program might write something back to that window that will help us diagnose the problem. To do that:

    1. Open a terminal window.
    2. In it, paste and run: "/Applications/IBM SPSS Statistics/SPSS Statistics.app/Contents/MacOS/stats"

    (please include the quotation marks)

You can also try looking in ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports and see if we wrote anything there during a crash. If so, please ZIP it and send it to me at marcantr@us.ibm.com

    Thanks.

Hi Rick, there's nothing in the Library folder.

I started SPSS using the terminal window and when it crashed, I received the following message:

"Parse failed for string" repeating over and over again.

This time the spinning globe appeared after I added a variable into my data file via edit / insert variable.

I submitted a crash report to SPSS so hopefully you have access to it. Here's what it shows:

We've had different questions from different developers about the issue(s) you're seeing:

The log indicates that you started SPSS and then did nothing with it for 4 hours, but we're wondering if that is really true. Did you start SPSS, move on to something else for a few hours, then return to the program?

Before starting SPSS again, we'd like you to clear your preferences. To do that:
    1. unZIP the attached script to your desktop
    2. In a text editor, change the line near the top that defines your user name on the Mac
    3. Save the file
    4. At the prompt, run:
      sudo sh clean_stats.sh
You will be prompted for your Mac password

After you clean all those preferences out, start stats from the console as you previously did.
After it freezes or crashes (whichever it is doing), go to
    ~/Library/Application Support/IBM/SPSS Statistics/one/CrashReport

Zip everything under there and send it to us.

    Additionally:
We've had some users who didn't have write access to ~/Library/Application Support/IBM/SPSS Statistics.

Please check to make sure you have write access to both the "one" directory (and the "28" directory, if it exists).

Try this in a console window:

    ls -altr "~/Library/Application Support/IBM/SPSS Statistics"

    ---

Another developer would like to know:
    1. If you have any other installs of SPSS on that computer, like SPSS 27, for example.
    2. What the date is of the file named spssengine.  (In Finder, search for spssengine)

Rick, thanks for your quick response.

I don't think I had SPSS running for four hours after starting it through the terminal

I have run the clean_stats script.

When I run ls -altr "~/Library/Application Support/IBM/SPSS Statistics", i have drwxr-xr-x access to both the "one" and "28" folders

I did previously have another instance of SPSS on this computer but I deleted it months ago after upgrading to version 28. We switched to the on-line service at that time. I do not see a file called spssengine on my machine when I search in finder.

I will run via terminal again and let you know what happens.

I forgot... search won't find spssengine; it's inside application bundles for SPSS.

    In a terminal window:

    cd "/Applications/IBM SPSS Statistics/SPSS Statistics.app/Contents/bin"
    ls -altr spssengine

and let me know the entire line sent back to the console. Thanks.

OK, one of my colleagues has said this:

"I recommend the user confirm that there is a /Applications/IBM SPSS Statistics/SPSS Statistics.app/Contents/bin folder on that system, and that it contains a file named spssengine. Once confirmed, have the user delete or rename the "/Applications/IBM SPSS Statistics 27" folder, and do the same for any sibling folder with 28 in the name. Then reboot and try Stats again."

I am having an issue the V29 grad pack guys. When I go to run binary logistic regression with GLM running the default settings for parameter estimates, it forces me to actually enter a value. I'm happy to do that but its not ideal and clearly a bug with the program. See attached screenshot. You can email at cj_footemd@yahoo.com as I would appreciate any feedback to resolve this problem such as bug patch. Thanks for your help in advance. CJ
