We've had different questions from different developers about the issue(s) you're seeing:
The log indicates that you started SPSS and then did nothing with it for 4 hours, but we're wondering if that is really true. Did you start SPSS, move on to something else for a few hours, then return to the program?
Before starting SPSS again, we'd like you to clear your preferences. To do that:
1. unZIP the attached script to your desktop
2. In a text editor, change the line near the top that defines your user name on the Mac
3. Save the file
4. At the prompt, run:
sudo sh clean_stats.sh
You will be prompted for your Mac password
After you clean all those preferences out, start stats from the console as you previously did.
After it freezes or crashes (whichever it is doing), go to
~/Library/Application Support/IBM/SPSS Statistics/one/CrashReport
Zip everything under there and send it to us.
Additionally:
We've had some users who didn't have write access to ~/Library/Application Support/IBM/SPSS Statistics.
Please check to make sure you have write access to both the "one" directory (and the "28" directory, if it exists).
Try this in a console window:
ls -altr "~/Library/Application Support/IBM/SPSS Statistics"
---
Another developer would like to know:
1. If you have any other installs of SPSS on that computer, like SPSS 27, for example.
2. What the date is of the file named spssengine. (In Finder, search for spssengine)

Subject: Frequent crashes SPSS 29 & Ventura
Hi Rick, there's nothing in the Library folder.
I started SPSS using the terminal window and when it crashed, I received the following message:"Parse failed for string" repeating over and over again.
This time the spinning globe appeared after I added a variable into my data file via edit / insert variable.
I submitted a crash report to SPSS so hopefully you have access to it. Here's what it shows:

Hi. We are not aware of any such problem.
Please try starting SPSS from a terminal window and see if you can replicate the crash. The program might write something back to that window that will help us diagnose the problem. To do that:
1. Open a terminal window.
2. In it, paste and run: "/Applications/IBM SPSS Statistics/SPSS Statistics.app/Contents/MacOS/stats"
(please include the quotation marks)
You can also try looking in ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports and see if we wrote anything there during a crash. If so, please ZIP it and send it to me at marcantr@us.ibm.com
Thanks.
