Does SPSS 29 open/run on MacOS Sequoia?

  • 1.  Does SPSS 29 open/run on MacOS Sequoia?

    Posted Fri August 30, 2024 03:26 AM

Well I see no one has asked this yet, so I'll be the first:

Does SPSS 29 open/run on MacOS Sequoia (v 15.0 beta)?

I know it isn't supported on Sequoia, because Sequoia is in beta. I just want to know if it runs. Has anyone tried it yet?

    Hi @Tom Ainsco,

Please keep an eye on the IBM Software Product Compatibility Reports to know when macOS 15.0 (Sequoia) becomes officially a supported OS for IBM SPSS Statistics, and what versions will be supported on it.

But yes, someone has been trying it 🙂

Statistics 29.0.2.0 on macOS 15.0 beta (Sequoia)
Statistics 30.0 (recent build) on macOS 15.0 beta (Sequoia)

    Hi David,

Thanks for your update on MacOS Sequoia and SPSS. Now that it is released, is there a final word on compatibility? I looked at the compatibility reports but didn't see an update.

    Thanks very much,

    Chris

Behaviour that I have noticed with one user who has upgraded is that before the upgrade SPSS had been licensed and was working OK with our site authorisation code.

After the upgrade,  when she went into Applications, IBM SPSS Statistics and launched SPSS Statistics, she had to relicense SPSS again with the site authorisation code.

Apart from that issue, it appears to run OK.

Thank you for your message -- I went ahead with the Mac OS 15 update and SPSS 29.0.0 seems to be working fine, no re-activation needed.

Christopher - just checking on your version - you meant 29.0.0 not 29.0.2.0 - thanks

Hi David, that is correct. My University didn't update to 29.0.2.0 yet, so I'm still running 29.0.0.

    Hi @Christopher Barrick

You really should be on IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0.2.0.  There are significant programming errors that have since been addressed by interim fix, fixpack, and modification release.

It's an interesting approach that your organization would take the time to apply all of these fixes individually, including the fix to run on macOS Sonoma - which is allowing your installation to run on Sequoia - rather than gaining all of these fixes in one motion by installing IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0.2.0.

    Hi David,

Thank you for your feedback -- if you don't mind, I'll pass your comment along to my IT team. I can't vouch for their reasoning but I suspect it's because there are relatively few of us who use SPSS.

Update to my earlier message, just tried updating to Sequoia myself to see if I could replicate the behaviour of the user that I mentioned and the same issue doesn't happen for me, ie I had SPSS 29.0.2 licensed already and after updating, I didn't have to reenter the authorisation code again.

I was running SPSS 29.0.0 on a 2019 Macbook Pro with MacOS Sonoma flawlessly until yesterday, when I had to upgrade to a new computer. I installed SPSS 29.0.2 on my new Macbook Pro running Sequoia, and I've had the following problems:

    • Starting the application takes about 60 seconds. On my 2019 machine it took about 6 or 7 seconds.
    • When I run analyses, the output window opens and says "processing..." for about 60 seconds before returning results - even for simple descriptives. The same process happened instantly on my 2019 machine.

I'd very much appreciate some help with this. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi @Duncan Greig, sorry you are experiencing a performance problem on your new Macbook. Although upon first time startup with a new version there is some installation of extensions that will take additional time, the second and subsequent startups of a new release should not do that. I recommend opening a support case if you have not already done so, and they will escalate to Development if they cannot resolve it with you.

Well, I'm an IT Tech at a university and various students who migrated from Sonoma to Sequoia, and installed SPSS 29.0.2 are experiencing licensing issues.

This same pop-up keeps appearing after the licensing process ends successfully.

Error obtained after licensing SPSS 29.0.2 in MacOS Sequoia
Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this? We already applied the fix, although with this SPSS version, it shouldn't be needed to do so and the server login keeps popping up. It's affecting a handful of students, all Mac, none Windows.

Hi @Ricardo Jorge Rosa, sorry you are seeing that problem. I have not heard of that happening before.

You might try deleting the file ~/Library/Preferences/com.ibm.spss.plist and restarting Statistics to see if that fixes the problem.

If the above does not fix the issue, please file a support ticket if you have not already done so, thanks.

Just checked the IBM Software Product Compatibility Reports and it is saying 29.0.2.0 is compatible with Sequoia (MacOS 15.0)

Well, then I don't get why we are getting a huge number of users with Sequoia and ARM having issues with the authorization code we generate.

    It makes no sense... :|

Hi @Ricardo Jorge Rosa, as recommended above I believe you should file a support ticket if you haven't already done so. AFAIK we have not heard of the problem you describe at other sites (at least not yet).

    Thanks Curtis!

The thing is... When I try to access https://www.ibm.com/mysupport/s/createrecord/NewCase?language=en_US , after filling everything, it just freezes and doesn't follow with the ticket acceptance. It's being challenging to have this kind of interaction with IBM. Is there any email address or such to which one can email and ask for assistance?

    Hello Ricardo,

If you are having issues opening a support case, you will need to work with the Help Desk that supports that platform.  From the IBM Support Portal where you tried to open a case, there is a tile that says Help Desk --> Get help --> Report a problem  submitting a case or registering for support.

    Hi @Ricardo Jorge Rosa

Above you mention applying a fix.  Which fix are you referring to?

IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0.2.0 is the release that is certified to run on both macOS 14 (Sonoma) and macOS 15 (Sequoia).  There is no additional interim fix necessary in order to run on Sonoma/Sequoia.

If you have been working with an older version of IBM SPSS Statistics, patching it, and applying interim fixes against it, then my assessment is that somewhere along the way the installation became corrupted.  My best advice is a clean install of Statistics 29.0.2.0.

    • First remove all remnants of SPSS Statistics from your system.  Do this by following Technote 522345.
    • Next install the latest release of IBM SPSS Statistics.  Statistics 29.0.2.0 (macOS)
    • Note:  BOTH the installation and the licensing processes must be done while logged in as a local administrator user.  After both of these steps are completed, then a standard user should be able to launch and use the product on this mac.
