Can go directly to 4.1.x coming from 2.2.6.65 using the traditional method of new and complete overwrite, then restore the back up created using viosbr ?

I don't think there are too many people with VIOS 2.2.6 wanting to test it ;-) afair even going from 2.2.6 to 3.1 by installing new version and then restoring viosbr could bring some errors and inconsistencies. Mostly because the names of the devices could change after the new installation and your SEA ent10 could occasionally become SEA ent15.

I would suggest you to do a fresh VIO installation AND configuration. Document your VIO configuration, better - automate it and you will not have such problem during the next upgrade from 4.1 to 14.1 ;-)
