A Century of Innovation, Now Powered by the Cloud
A prominent financial institution in the Southern Hemisphere, this large South American bank has been a pioneer in financial services for over a century. Committed to modernization, the bank embraced a cloud-first strategy to enhance agility, scalability, and operational efficiency.
The Business Challenge: Modernizing While Maintaining Stability
While the bank had been leveraging AWS for Intel-based workloads, it needed to maintain its IBM Power infrastructure while optimizing costs and centralizing management. Their objective? A seamless transition to the cloud without disrupting mission-critical operations.
The Outcome: A Resilient, Integrated, and Future-Ready Cloud Strategy
With IBM Cloud and IBM Power Virtual Server (PowerVS), the bank achieved:
- Infrastructure Modernization: Upgraded from Power8/Power9 to Power10 servers on PowerVS to run production workloads.
- Cloud-First Strategy: Seamless migration and integration into the cloud. Moving Power workloads out of the data center, aligning with the bank’s vision of a fully cloud-based infrastructure.
- Platform Continuity: Maintaining the stability of existing systems while modernizing operations.
- Seamless Integration: IBM solutions integrated effortlessly with the bank’s VMware environment, ensuring minimal disruption.
- Diverse Workload Support: Running SAP HANA, custom applications, Oracle Database, Openshift and DB2.
The Solution
The bank runs its production workloads on IBM PowerVS, with disaster recovery managed via storage-level replication to a secondary site. As part of the deployment, DR is supported in a secondary IBM Cloud zone. Backup is managed through a combination of NetBackup and Storage Protect.
Winning Approach: A Strategic Partnership with IBM
IBM collaborated closely with the financial institution to ensure a seamless migration through several key initiatives:
- Joint Cloud Workshop: IBM conducted a hands-on session demonstrating cloud innovations and migration benefits, giving the bank confidence in IBM Cloud’s capabilities.
- Close Collaboration: A strong working relationship between IBM and the bank’s teams facilitated a smooth transition with ongoing support.
- Competitive TCO Analysis: IBM’s detailed Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) comparison helped the bank make an informed decision about the cost-effectiveness of migrating to IBM Cloud.
- Successful PoC: A proof of concept (PoC) validated IBM Cloud’s ability to support the bank’s workloads, assuring them of a secure, scalable, and efficient migration.
