  • 1.  z/OS 3.1 ESP under z/VM 7.1

Was just curious if anyone had tried z/OS 3.1 ESP under z/VM 7.1?  I know z/VM 7.1 is no longer supported and IBM doesn't recommend using unsupported systems.  Was just curious in case we needed to use a 7.1 z/VM system for a temporary purpose.  Thank you in advance.

, but was just curious in case we needed to use a z/VM 7.1 system.  Thanks for any feedback.

I would develop NG Cryptography on that, If I only had a sponsor :-)

If you have a license for z/VM V7 and are paying Service and Support (S&S), you can get z/VM V7.2 or 7.3 at no additional charge.  You can do an "upgrade" installation to the newer level rather than install z/VM anew, which entails moving all your customizations to the new version.  That being said, unless there is a feature provided in a later z/VM release that is needed by z/OS 3.1 running as a guest, z/OS 3.1 is likely to work under z/VM 7.1.

    Hello,

I'm only replying in a general way, as I have no experience in trying to run the new z/OS 3.1 under an unsupported z/VM.  And I haven't looked up which z/VM levels have which machine facilities.  (We don't test unsupported combinations in Development.)  If you wanted to see what machine facilities the z/OS release level needs, you can find that in the z/OS Planning for Installation book.  The z/OS 3.1 Planning for Installation is found here:  https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/SSLTBW_2.5.0/pdf/e0zb100_v3r1.pdf

In the book, Table 7 contains the "Minimum server levels and machine facilities that are required for z/OS".  You can see for z/OS 3.1, we require:

    • z/VM 7.2,
    • z14 or z14s
    • All previously required machine facilities, plus the
      following extensions (by STFLE bit):
      Bit
      Machine Facility
      54
      The entropy-encoding-compression facility.
      58
The miscellaneous instruction extension 2 facility.
      130
      The instruction execution protection facility.
      134
      The vector binary-coded-decimal facility.
      135
      The vector enhancements facility 1

z/OS 3.1 ESP is supported under 7.2 and 7.3 z/VM according to IBM doc.  In a test, I checked z/OS 3.1 under z/VM 7.1 and immediately got a PSW Wait state 006 related to a hardware issue. Considering z/VM handles I/O it's possible it's not compatible. So I'm not sure z/OS 3.1 is supported under z/OS 7.1 as I hoped. Sometimes IBM as many vendors do will, say a product only works under-supported releases, but that doesn't always mean it won't work.
