IBM, in partnership with the German space agency DLR and Airbus, developed the robot, CIMON (Crew Interactive MObile companioN). This robot uses IBM Watson to carry on a conversation with astronauts in the International Space Station (https://www.ibm.com/thought-leadership/innovation-explanations/cimon-ai-in-space).

I'm looking for research papers describing how IBM implemented this effort. I'm particularly interested in
    (1) the facial movements in the face of the robot and supporting research behind this movement including emulating speech and how these movements communicate expressions,
    (2) IBM's AI components used to implement this solution
    (3) If IBM used visual recognition integrated into the robots facial responses

I'd like to create a similar, simple, cartoonish face for a chatbot, and am looking for lessons learned and other insights.
