Highlights from Wednesday Morning Presentations - TBM Conference 2019

Farewell to Chris Pick

Apptio CEO Sunny Gupta, along with TBM Council Board Members Rhonda and Brock, say goodbye to Chris Pick.

  • Brock "passes the coin," a tradition in his company where a coin is passed to those who are counted on.
  • Chris Pick thanks everyone for growing the TBM Council to what it has become today!

Fireside Chat with Adriana Karaboutis, CIO & CDO of National Grid

Sunny sat down for a fun conversation with Adriana to discuss her TBM advocacy and how she brought her knowledge of TBM to benefit National Grid.

  • Using TBM to model possible business paths and projects before committing resources.
  • With the cloud, everyone can innovate, but that means everyone also adds cost. Make sure that you are pushing the value of the cloud to leadership.
  • Strategy: "Remove the adjectives, just give me data!" Use only numbers and data - avoid using non-specific terminology like "a lot" or "many."
  • I took Apptio with me from my previous role to my current position at National Grid! Apptio is part of my toolkit.
  • How did you convince your organization to begin using TBM?
    • There is an a-ha moment with Bill of IT: building a report quickly shows the value of these tools and concepts.
    • It also takes time: the workforce won't accept new methodologies in one day!
  • Work closely with your CFO! Finance and IT Finance will intersect eventually. Ensure that you have a close working partnership.
  • TBM is a constant process to manage IT Finance data, but you must also act on it. For example, identify 2-3 people in your organization who can make use of the data you collect.
  • Understand more of your business, not just your IT Finance corner. The more you understand about your company's plan, the better you can align data and identify spending issues, and match the leadership initiative.

Apptio Product Vision: Now, Next, and Beyond

Scott Chancellor, Apptio CPO, walks through the Apptio features and products for Q4 2019 and 2020!

  • The key questions that Apptio Product must answer:
    • 1. What customer needs are most important?
    • 2. How do we provide that value from now through 2020?
    • We understand that scaling the TBM discipline is difficult, requiring expertise, time, and attention. The following new features aim to seamlessly unite data, process, and people.
  • The Improved User Experience
    • From now through 2020, all Apptio tools will receive incremental UI updates, making it easier to find what you need and improve accessibility for all users, newcomers or veterans alike!
  • DataLink Update
    • The DataLink tool is being revamped to simplify the process of adding and modifying your connectors.
  • Self Service Reporting & Analytics
    • Simplifies the access, creation, and sharing of data across Apptio products, eliminating the need for a specialist to upload data into your system.
    • In addition, you can create and share your own custom reports.
  • Collaboration
    • In-line annotations and conversations across Apptio products. Ask questions directly from reports and receive answers from the appropriate users! All users can view the discussions, allowing them to benefit from your provided context.
  • Actionable Insights
    • A two-part tool included with all Apptio products!
    • Insights automatically parses your data for anomalies and highlights them for your attention in reports, which provide a narrative, key data points, and relevant graphs.
    • Action Plan allows you to create your own set of Insights that can be assigned to users for investigation and analysis.
  • Agile Investment Planning
    • Launching in Q4 2019, use this tool to modify your Apptio workflow to fit your methodology, from waterfall to agile and even in-between!
    • You can even track work as it is being completed, to better stay informed of team progress.
  • All of the above features will be available for free and included with your existing product plans. No extra charge, setup, or service is required to gain the benefits of these features once they are live!
  • Apptio Cloudability
    • Unifying Cloudability into the Apptio product market.
    • Provides visibility into your cloud spend, and helps you manage the costs with the included Rightsizing tool that recommends adjustments.
    • Further includes Container Cost Allocation to adjust your spend for container-based models.

The Power of the Apptio Community

Todd Joseph, Apptio CCO, talks briefly about the network of Apptio and TBM professionals who have all gone on the journey to improve their IT Finance processes.

Where FinOps & TBM Intersect

FinOps Foundation Founders: J.R. Storment (Cloudability) and Mike Fuller (Atlassian),

  • Our financial methods were not keeping up with our Cloud business, so how do we quantify and gain value from the cloud?
  • The cloud changes the dynamic of finance management. There are many challenges that have not been effectively addressed by traditional management models.

FinOps is that new model, bringing financial accountability to variable cloud spend.

  • A prescriptive model of actions, best practices, and culture
  • Enables a distruted product, finance, and business teams
  • FinOps is a life cycle, a constant process. Make small achievable goals with each cycle. As you master the cycle, you can move faster and make bigger impacts each time you complete the cycle.

TBM's approach is from the top down. FinOps approaches finances from the bottom up! With both approaches, you have the perfect intersection of IT Spend and Cloud Spend management, giving you a full picture

Reliable Insigts and the Success of Hybrid and Multicloud IT Estates

Presented by J. Craig Lowery, Ph.D., VP Analyst, Gartner

  • There are so many new ways to do things, and experiments on which is best, that users are always reassessing their priorities to try to do their best work. It's COMPLEXITY!
  • Cloud has grown just in the last two years. Our assumptions of what performs, what is secure, and what is efficient, are all invalidated by the actual technology, and only now are companies trying to catch up.
  • Cost Management & Optimizations: The #1 Policy Priority

The Future of IT Shark Tank

Presented by KPMG CDO Dan Dohert: how will you respond to the market speed?

Clockwise from 12/Noon and ending in the center:

  • Modern delivery: Where do we have silos that limit our agility?
  • Flexible IT workforce: Where are our skill shortages likely to impact us most?
  • Data as an asset: How do we make our data available, resuable, quickly with reduced proliferation?
  • Customer trust: How can we instill the principles of technical trust into all delivery models?
  • Dynamic Investment: How can we as an organization remove funding friction and eliminate waste?
  • Market speed: How can we make our operating model more flexible and scalable?
