Trace continuity is key when observing modern service architectures. If serverless workloads are part of these transactions, it requires dedicated vendor support for the different technologies, like AWS Lambda, AWS Fargate or Google Cloud run. In cases where this support is not given or other circumstances do not allow vendor native tracing, OpenTelemetry is here to step in. It provides a “Vendor-neutral” SDK and trace format which can be exported to many different backends direct or indirect from the Function-as-a-Service environment.
