Summary

Java has grown into one of the most popular programming languages in the world and a stalwart technology for enterprise development and operational runtime systems since late 1990s. In 2021, the Java ecosystem saw the culmination of ongoing change and progression, particularly in its community leadership and the direction of the technology platform.This webinar will provide a conversational walk through the long-term viability of the Java programming model in supporting many of the applications organizations are looking to implement today and in the future. It presents an opportunity to track the course of Java’s evolution through key milestones: OpenJDk, AdoptOpenJDK, Eclipse Adoptium and license updates. Murali Krishna Veeravalli:
Murali Krishna Veeravalli has over 25 years of IT experience, the last 22 of which have been with IBM delivering development, delivery leadership and product management roles centred around Java and other runtime technologies.
In his current role, since July-2017, as the Product Manager for IBM Runtime Technologies, Murali is responsible for building a cohesive story of Runtimes market offerings and launching offerings pertaining to programming languages and runtimes that are of strategic importance to IBM, it’s partners and customers. His recent accomplishments in this role include the launch of IBM Semeru Runtimes - a high performant and cloud-optimised Java runtime underpinned by the Eclipse OpenJ9 JVM, and IBM Runtimes for Business - a flexible and cost-effective offering entitling support and monitoring capabilities for the IBM Semeru Runtimes and Eclipse Temurin OpenJDK distributions.



Mark Stoodley:
With a background in compiler optimization and computer architecture, Mark joined IBM in 2002 to develop JIT compilers for Java. After many years working as a JIT compiler developer and technical lead for WebSphere Real Time, he was asked to lead the work to refactor the IBM J9 Java Virtual Machine into two parts and to create two open source projects at the Eclipse Foundation: Eclipse OMR, providing reusable runtime components for building all kinds of language runtimes, and Eclipse OpenJ9, which uses OMR to build a Java Virtual Machine optimized for container- and cloud-based Java workloads. Following the successful creation of both projects, Mark is now an IBM Senior Technical Staff Member and Chief Architect for IBM Java, leading Java technical strategy for a global team at IBM that supplies Java runtimes to meet the needs of thousands of Java based software products and services.


Bola Rotibi, Research Director, Software Development and Delivery
Bola has over 25 years of expertise spanning engineering, software development and IT analysis. She is the founder of Creative Intellect Consulting, and has worked at MWD Advisors and Ovum. Bola is a Chartered Engineer and has industry experience of application development and network computing in several sectors. She has worked as a senior software developer for Reuters and a chemical and process control engineer for Air Products. As an analyst, Bola has built a wide portfolio of product evaluations, strategy reports and competitive analysis reports. She is regularly sought to provide input into and drive supplier and product selection processes.


Clive Howard, Associate Principal Analyst
 Clive is a technology consultant and entrepreneur. He started his career as a developer in digital agencies before founding his own consultancy in 2002. More recently, he has delivered programmes to improve user experiences and so enhance business effectiveness and customer engagement. His clients range from start-ups to global brands in a variety of sectors. He has a passion for innovation and technology that provides sustainable benefits for businesses and their customers.
