In-Application Promotions: When Should I Promote Projects?

Mon December 26, 2016 02:55 PM

This article pertains to a three instance platform that has had its Enforcements set to the Apptio Best Practice standards. The Cost Transparency project is used as an example. If you have a custom project that uses the three-project stack format, you will substitute the name “Cost Transparency” for the name of your custom project.

I would like to add a new user or change the Role permissions of a userHome (sometimes referred to as AdminDB)These changes should be made in the target instance and only promoted if you want all of the access and permission rules to match between the source and destination instances (e.g. ONLINE production/STANDBY)See More Details
I have added a new project navigational Tab to the top of the Reporting page and want the new Tab in my other instancesParamsEdit in development, then, Development to Stage Stage to ProductionSee More Details
I have added a new report navigational Tab to a report collection and want the Tab to appear in my other instancesSettingsEdit in development, then, Development to Stage Stage to ProductionSee More Details

Note: Configuration changes (Transforms, Reports, Modeling, Metrics) should be promoted from development to the stage environment frequently and not allowed into production until it has been validated and approved. This practice will empower TBMA’s with the benefits of testing for performance, calculation time, and data validation before any possible issues are delivered to the production environment.
