Invalid or bad characters contained within a dataset being uploaded to Apptio can cause a row reduction in Apptio compared to the original file.
The following steps will show how to isolate the problematic character.
Situation
After an upload of dataset, a reduction in row count is seen between original file and dataset in Apptio.
Step 1
Note the row count of the dataset showing in Apptio after it has been successfully loaded.

Step 2
Open original file that was uploaded to Apptio in a program that will show row count.
-Examples of programs that could be used are Excel or Notepad++.
Step 3
With the file now open, go to the next row following the row count shown in Apptio for the dataset.
-Example: If dataset in Apptio is showing row count of 1202 you would want to go to row 1203 of the original file.
Step 4
Search for any problematic characters on this row that could cause a break in the upload process.
-Problematic characters can range depending upon the file type and original source.
-A list of possible problematic characters can be found in the guide “What are acceptable characters in a dataset?” article.
Step 5
After locating and removing possible problematic character from the original source file. Save changes to file and attempt to upload again confirming if all rows are now visible.
-Steps 2-4 may need to be repeated in order to find all characters attributing to row reduction
-As each problematic character is found and removed you will see an increase in row count until it matches original file
Step 6
Open a ticket with Apptio support for assistance if problematic character cannot be located. - Send a request to https://support.apptio.com with original file attached if possible
