Navigation Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the difference between the Move to Day versus Set Work to Day options that are available when you right click on a bar in the Gantt view?
When you select a group of work orders and select Move to Day, the distance between the work orders is preserved which is useful if there are constraints.

Set Work to Day is the action most users will commonly want to utilize.  All work is moved to the selected date/time.

2. What is the difference between the Duplicate Schedule and Duplicate Schedule Definition actions?
Duplicate Schedule Definition duplicates just the schedule information, including the query that was used, calendar information, and other data that you entered on the Schedule tab.  Most users will utilize Duplicate Schedule Definition.

Duplicate Schedule duplicates the entire schedule record, including data on the Schedule tab, and changes you made in the Gantt view.

3. What does the blue, italicized font indicate?
If the description is displayed in blue, italicized font with an asterisk this indicates that a change has been made to this record in the schedule but not committed to update the work order record.

4. What does it mean when a work order bar(s) is moved in the Gantt view and a message that says value changed due to constraints is received?
This occurs when a work order is moved outside the Start Date and End Date range of the schedule.

5. What is the logic to populate start date and end date in the work table in the schedule?
*The logic below applies to work orders that do not have children or tasks included in the schedule – the Start and End Date of work orders or tasks that have children that are included in the schedule will be based on the Start and End Date of the children.

The work order’s Scheduled Start and Scheduled Finish date take first priority.  If there is only one date (a Scheduled Start or Scheduled Finish), then the duration is used to calculate the other.  For example, if the Scheduled Start Date is 10/24/17 at 2:00 PM and the duration is 2 hours and there is no Scheduled Finish Date, then the End Date is calculated as 10/24/17 at 4:00 PM.
If there are no scheduled dates and there is a Target Start and/or Target Finish date, then the target date is used (if there is only one target date, the duration is used to calculate the other).
If there are no scheduled or target dates, the current date and time that the schedule is built or discarded and refreshed is used.
If the “Interruptible” flag is set on the work order, the work order will not be scheduled during non-working time in the schedule.  Therefore, the Start and End date will be modified accordingly.  For example, if the duration of the work order is 10 hours long and the start time is at 7 AM, but the end of the shift is 3 PM, then the end date and time won’t be until 9 AM on the next day because the last 2 hours will be scheduled into the next working time period.  If the work order is not interruptible, then the end date will be 5 PM the same day.
If the duration is 0 and if both the Scheduled Start and Scheduled Finish OR the Target Start and Target Finish are NOT populated, then the End Date in the table view in the Graphical Scheduling application will be null/blank.  The Start Date will be populated based on the logic below:
o If the Scheduled Start is populated but the Scheduled Finish is NOT populated, then the Start Date will be populated based on the Scheduled Start.
o If the Scheduled Start is NOT populated but the Scheduled Finish is populated, then the Start Date will be populated based on the Scheduled Finish.
o If neither the Scheduled Start or Scheduled Finish date are populated and the Target Start is populated but the Target Finish is NOT populated, then the Start Date will be populated based on the Target Start.
o If neither the Scheduled Start or Scheduled Finish date are populated and the Target Start is NOT populated but the Target Finish is populated, then the Start Date will be populated based on the Target Finish.
If the Scheduled Start and Scheduled Finish dates on the work order are both populated but the duration is 0 and the interruptible flag is not checked, then both the Start Date and End Date in the table view will be populated and the length of the bar in the Gantt view will be based on the difference between Scheduled Finish – Scheduled Start.
o If the interruptible flag is checked, then the End Date in the table will be null and the bar in the Gantt view will be displayed as a diamond.  In order to determine an End Date for an interruptible work order, the duration is required.  See the explanation about interruptible above.
If either tasks or children work orders are included in the schedule, then the Start Date and End Date of the parent work order is determined based on Start Date and End Date of the children or tasks.  In this simple scenario below, the Start Date of the parent work order is based on the earliest Start Date of the tasks and the End Date is determined based on the latest End Date of the tasks.  The duration of the parent may be equal to the sum of the duration of the tasks if the tasks are being completed sequentially.
However, the duration of the parent work order may not equal the sum of the duration of the tasks or children work orders.  In the scenario below, task 30 and 40 are being completed in parallel, therefore the duration of the parent work order is not equal to the sum of the duration of each individual task.
