Even small instances of Db2 Analytics Accelerator on IBM Z provide significant query acceleration
Roland_Seiffert | July 18, 2018
The IBM Db2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS V7.1 (IDAA) can be deployed directly on IBM Z without additional external hardware. This deployment option makes it easy to get started with Db2 Analytics Accelerator and take advantage of the query acceleration and analytics capabilities it provides for Db2 z/OS.
So, there is an opportunity to leverage the Accelerator in a broader set of use case using small accelerator implementations. We performed performance measurements to prove that even small deployments may bring significant benefits w.r.t. Db2 z/OS query acceleration and MSU savings. In the test setup, which is based on TPC-H, we loaded a 1 TB database into Db2 z/OS, created the required indexes, loaded the tables into the accelerator and ran queries against Db2 z/OS – in one test without using the Accelerator, in the other test using it. We formalized the results in a so-called proof point that you can review for details:

We found that even an Accelerator with only 8 IFLs can provide orders of magnitude faster query processing than Db2 z/OS natively running on 16 CPs. An added benefit is that the z/OS MSU consumption is dramatically reduced.
On z14, execute a moderately complex TPC-H-based query using Db2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS on Z v7.1 up to 63x faster and with almost 100% MSU savings compared to executing the query on Db2 for z/OS v11 with database indexes set.
On z14, execute a complex TPC-H-based query using Db2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS on Z v7.1 up to 4886x faster and with almost 100% MSU savings compared to executing the query on Db2 for z/OS v11 with database indexes set
Sometimes there are concerns that loading data into the Accelerator would cost too much MSU. Therefore, we compared the Accelerator load to Db2 z/OS index creation.
On z14, load a 1 TB TPC-H-based database into the Db2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS v7.1 on Z with up to 44% fewer MSUs in approximately the same time as it takes to create database indexes in Db2 for z/OS v11.
Personally, I find these results impressive. The benefits are such that there should be no Db2 z/OS without an accelerator…
