As queries over very large data volumes become common place in Lakehouse environments, this presentation looks at a feature that will be extremely important to get interactive response times. A query that runs in say 2 seconds over a table that has 100 Million rows is interactive. What if the table had 1 Trillion rows? If we extrapolate the response time linearly, 20,000 seconds (or over 5 hours) is no longer interactive. We will revisit Materialized Query Tables to see how one could exploit the feature to drastically reduce query response times by taking advantage of an existing feature that is often underutilized.
