Migration from V7000 Gen1 to FS5200

  • 1.  Migration from V7000 Gen1 to FS5200

    Posted Fri January 27, 2023 10:16 AM
    Hello,

My client has recently purchased a fs5200 to replace their v7000 Gen1.

I am having an issue creating a partnership on the v7000.

All FC ports are connected at the same speed, zoning is complete. On the FS5200 when i create a partnership it automatically detects the v7000, however when I try to create the partnership on the v7000 it states that no candidates can be found.

I have checked the FC connections on the v7000 and I can see the 5200's WWNs.

I have checked the compatibility matrix and it should work unless I am reading it incorrectly

    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/spectrum-virtualize-family-products-inter-system-metro-mirror-and-global-mirror-compatibility-cross-reference

I have also followed - Migrating data by using Fibre Channel connections with no luck as of yet.

Has anyone got any in site to what could be the cause of this issue please?

    code level :-
    5200 = 8.5.0.5
    v7000 = 7.8.1.8

    Thank you,

    Andy

    Hi there.
Just going to ask the obvious first question... are you sure that your zoning is correct? I realize that you said that the zoning is complete, but most of the time when you don't see a target there's something going on with the zoning. So I wanted to see if we could rule that out.

    Hello Andy,

please check the system layer and adjust it if necessary.
    Command:
    Query : "lsystem |grep layer"
Change : "chsystem -layer storage or replication".

This must be identical on both systems. I assume that no system is virtualized under a SVC or in a current replication, so the setting as such does not matter. And can be done during operation.

    As described here:

Hi Andy, please check the following:

    1. That your V7000 and 5200 are in the SAME layer (in the lssystem or system information)

2: That you are using the correct WWPNs - please note that the 5200 will have NPIV on by default, this means it will have target only WWPNs for use by a host system, and target/initiator WWPNs that are for use by other FlashSystem or Storwize or SVC nodes and backend storage.   I recommend using the NPIV feature (so don't turn it off), but check in lsfabric on the 5200  for the WWPNs of the V7000 to see if they are blocked because you have zoned the NPIV host only WWPNs. I have attached a diagram to assist.

    Hi Andy,

Ddi you check the system layer on the V7K side? You may need to change it to "replication layer" or "storage layer" ( need to controle on both FS5200 and V7K" if you have correct SAN zones and you are able to see WWPNs at the both sides: That was the setting for the Virtualize storage systems to be used as external storage or replication partner within the same family or SVC systems.

    Hi Andy,

Did you check the System Layer on the V7K ( and on the FS5200) : You may need to change it to "Replication Layer" on the systems. That was the setting for that the Vritualize family storages to be used as external storage or the same level replication partner within the same family storage systems or SVC:

Hi my client also purchases Fs5200, so we have to move the data from v7000 to global mirror. But there are no replicated ports enabled here. Can you please help me how to create the partnwrship between them

Hi - please see my response above (Message 4) - You need to check the Layer and the NPIV ports.

Please note that a 5200 on 8.5.0 will default to NPIV enabled.  This means you need to make sure you have zoned the Physical WWPNs to the V7000 G1 and vice versa.  If you use the host ports they will not be valid.

a good source of information in any block storage migration

as other said, make sure zoning is done between physical WWPN and physical WWPN (FS5200 have 3 WWPN / port only physical WWPN will work)

    Hi Andy,

I'm currently doing the same thing but migrating from a V7000G3 to a FS5200. We decided to do the migration by first replicating the data from one system to the other with metro mirror. The main thing to check as has already been stated is to check the the zonning is correctly done using the physical port WWN's. At my customer the v7000 had NPIV turned off but it was on for the FS5200. As soon as the correct WWN's for the FS5200 were used the rest was easy. No need to change the sysytem layer on any of the boxes if it's being done this way.

    Cheers,
