Is IBM Storage Defender similar/better than SPP? Where can I get installers to test it out?

We use SPP for our virtual environment. Is there a smooth transition/migration to IBM Storage Defender?

Hi,

I think that this is IBM's answer for competitors way to detect ransomware attacks, where they work together with Cohesity.

There are other ways to detect ransomware that doesnt need any replacement of backup softwares, for example using ELK, which is a populare SOC (SIEM) tool to use.

If you are looking for alternatives to both backup and restore your services faster, than snapshots is a valid option.

If you want the snapshots to be taken regardless of block device (Eg local harddisk etc), or want longer retentions or more versions, than Spictera Unified Storage using snapshot can be a good option too.

Yes, however, you can just buy Storage Virtualize by itself too. If you want it via subscription, IBM Storage Defender is the way to go. The other bonus of buying via Defender is that you now have access to all the other components and features of Defender.

This is not accurate Nezih. It is not sold together with IBM Fashsystem. Yes, it can work with IBM Flashsystem, but it is not sold with it.

Unfortunately, regarding SPP, that is not what I'm hearing from IBM here in PH. They are hinting that SPP will be EOM and is pushing us to sell/use Defender. I would like to believe that SPP is not going away in the near future as we are have invested so much in the product.

Is IBM Storage Defender similar/better than SPP? Where can I get installers to test it out?

We use SPP for our virtual environment. Is there a smooth transition/migration to IBM Storage Defender?

IBM Storage Defender is a software bundle provides single pane of glass management solution with IBM Storage Virtualize based storage. It contains Spectrum Protect as a legacy backup solution and Cohesity for Vmware backups, CDM for automating safeguarded copies etc. it's not replacement of SPP.

Defender with CDM + SGC + Sentinel protect data on it's source and shows data protection score on its unique dashboard. No backup server, network and/or backed up server's resource bottlenecks. Of course customers must continue to back up their data with backup softwares for out of box - offsite - long term etc. copy requirements

And No, SP continues to it's operation. And it also integrated with Defender's dashboard.

Yes, I was told that SP is integrated with Defender's dashboard, which is cloud-borne. Is Defender VM-level backup component integrated with SP for long term data protection, using LTO8 or higher as end-storage?

I think you are asking, can I store Defender Data Protect backups to my Storage Protect servers. The answer is yes. Today it supports backing it up to Storage Protect container pools. The ability to store it to Storage Protect tape is coming soon.

I think the time is now to start moving all VM backups from SP and SPP. 

Speak to your IBM partner manager about license conversions.

You will need SP for any tape offload and we find it better for the really long retentions to stick to an in guest archive to tape.

IBM Data Protect (Blue Cohesity) can offload to S3.

This allows you many ways to offer immutability.

All SPv7's have been announced end of service life too.

3 node cluster minimum might be a deal break for small customers as the ROBO edition does not permit a larger than 16TB storage pool.

Oh and IBM DP does not support external storage, only ReadyNodes

Nezih ... this is not quite accurate. Yes, you can leverage IBM Storage Virtualize, but it's not required.

This is not quite right Nezih. IBM Storage Defender has IBM Storage Virtualize in its licensing model, but does not require IBM Storage Virtualize. IBM Storage Defender Data Protect/Replica (OEM-in of Cohesity) is new technology we recommend vs. SPP. If you are using SPP, please talk to your IBM or BP and discuss a strategy to move to IBM Storage Defender Data Protect/Replica or IBM Storage Defender Storage Protect components.

Is a VMware shop or are you utilizing sp for containers as well?  To get the absolute best VMware restores I'd advise looking into defender. And if you're leveraging it for containers the most recent upgrade will force you to license fusions backup/restore which is the same mechanism in spp - it will just be licensed differently to my knowledge.  Feel free to reach out for more information.

Currently we are are VMWARE shop. But there are plans/initiatives to use openshift (or similar technology) within 1-2 years.

We are seriously looking at Defender Data Protect. However, the price is really not that ideal comparing to our current SPP.
