Yes, there is no way to expand in your current version.
If it's traditional Raid6 instead of DRaid6, you won't be able to expand your mdisk, even if it's also on 8.3.1.x.

Hi TMasteen,
The mdisk that I currently have is in raid6, does this mean there's no way to expand it even though I upgrade the firmware version to 8.3.1?

Hello Soon,
Assuming you have a Distributed array, support for DRAID expansion starts at version 8.3.1
See blog from Barry Whyte and Andrew Maritn about this topic: https://barrywhytestorage.blog/2020/03/25/draid-expansion-the-important-details/comment-page-1/

Subject: How to expand existing mdisk using new disk in V5000
Hi,
I have a Storwize V5000 with software release 7.8.1.15, I bought 7 new disks and slot into the nearline enclosure. Now I want to add the new disks into existing mdisks (in other word to expand the current array size). From the GUI, I did not see any option to configure such a way, perhaps there's a way to do it using cli?
I know that I could just create a new mdisks utilizing all the new disks and add it into existing pool, but this way I will waste another 2 disks just for raid parity.
