as promised I have brought up this topic in our team meeting.
Common sense is, that the design is as I had stated initially, that is, the WWPNs do not change during a node canister replacement.
One of my team mates, however, mentioned one case when exactly that had happened. It was caused by conducting a node canister replacement in a rather unusual way and not adhering to the defined repair method.

From my experience with V5100: Replacing one controller yes it does change the WWPN for that node. I had to keep up at SAN alias level.

some remarks on your inquiry and the other responses posted by community members:
- replacing a V7000 controller (alias node canister) does not change the FC adapter WWPNs. The same are derived from the system-wide VPD (vital product data)
- FC SAN zoning therefore is not related to error message "Fewer Fibre Channel ports operational"; this message just tells you, that no link was established
- Also, this error message is different from the "no I/O issue" you mentioned. In that case, the port would be seen online, but inactive, whereas offline means offline. This status occasionally does confuse users, hence the mantra I tend to tell them is: Inactive is not equal to oflline.
- Depending on the V7000 generation / hardware model the adapter cards either are included in a replacement node canister (Gen1) or separate FRUs (Gen2 and later)

I notice this (Fewer Fibre Channel ports operational) error after replacing one of the controllers in V7000 storage. It shows both controllers online, the ethernet port is working fine (as there is no alert). I checked and verified the link with the SAN switch, and found no issue there.
- While searching for the related issue some documents suggest changing the controller as an adapter is on the system board. (in case of V7000 storage)
- While some other suggestions are, the issue is due to no I/O from that controller, once there is traffic in the link it will change to active
Can anyone suggest where should I look further to pinpoint this issue and how can I solve this?
