Changing Virtual ISAM disk space

If I allocate more disk space in an ISAM virtual appliance does ISAM automatically notice the change in the volume, and increase the filesystem to its size?
If not, how can in increment the disk space in ISAM?

    Joao,

If you increase the size of the disk the appliance will not automatically increase the size of the partitions.  You need to do this yourself manually using something like gparted.  You just need to ensure that both partitions are of equal size.

How can I do that in ISAM? I can login to ISAM using LIM or ssh. How can I change the partition size inside ISAM?
In ISAM is there any tool like the one you refer where I can increase (or decrease) the size of the filesystems used internally in ISAM?

You can't do it from inside ISAM, but instead need to do it externally.  For example, gparted has a bootable ISO.  You can boot from this and then modify the size of the partitions.

Another way to get a bigger disk is to take a snapshot from the current VM and then restore it to a new Virtual Appliance that has been created with a bigger disk.

    Hi

Another way to tackle this is via standardization and automation:

    • You could build your VM provisionning pipeline (if you have such thing) to always create ISAM VA vm disk storage of equal size (all 100 GB for instance thus granting ~50 GB per partition). On our ISAM Liberty appliances, it yields on average 66% un-used storage, and on our Web Proxy ISAM appliances 80%+ of free storage. Oh well : it turns out, we could have provisioned our Appliances with a lot less storage after all. But the truth is often with san storage technologies, your VM really only gets allocated space it consumes, and the maximum storage you allocate to it is really more like a policy (maximum allowed storage).
    • Ensure logs do not accumulate by externalizing them with rsyslog. This can be achieve for almost all system logs.
    • Regularly run purge process for any support file and configuration snapshots to be downloaded and saved (archived if need be) elsewhere out of your appliances.

This way, you are pretty sure you will never have storage short issue.

    Hi Scott,

We increased the disc on our VM and then used GParted to allocate the added disc.
However, when using GParted we couldn´t change the two existing partitions, instead we could only create a new partition for the added disc.

Will this also work fine or do we have to increase the two existing partitions for it to work?

    Regards
    Dennis

    Dennis,

You  need to increase the size of the existing partitions.  Creating a new partition will have no impact.

    Thanks.

    Thank you Scott.
I figured it out on how to increase the current two partitions.

Firstly i needed to allocate the new disc to the "extended" file system part in order for me to be able to increase the existing partitions.
However, i could only increase one of the partitions, the inactive one and not the active. What i then needed to do was to delete the inactive partition and then create a new one, then i could increase both the existing one and the new.

Note: If you delete the inactive partition you will loose all the data on it, so if you have data on the inactive partition you don´t want to loose you need to create a new partition and copy the data to that new partition.

    Dear Joao,

could you please share the steps to increase the disk space on ISAM 10.0 VM version. I have created the new VM with more disk space and applied the snapshot is not working.

    Please share the needful info.

    Hello vijayabaskar,

I just tested the GParted solution and it is working.

    Steps what I did:
      download live ISO for GParted
      shutdown the ISVA VM
use VM consloe (aka GUI) and expand  disk to ISVA VM (an example add 8 GB more)
attach live GParted ISO  to VM
      reboot VM using live ISO
in GParted the extended partition select (this contains both ISVA partition)
      resize  this extended partition
resize ISVA 2 partition (add more space)
move ISVA 2 partition to end of resized extended partition
resize ISVA 1 partition (add more space)
move ISVA 2 partition back to next ISVA 1 (so some free space after ISVA 2 partition will be at end of extended partition)
      Shutdown
      remove atatched ISO
      restart ISVA
    DONE

Important: you need to add exactly same  space to both partition (in my case I add to both an extra 3670 MB). Both ISVA partition MUST be same size.
