If you are in the IT industry and want to improve your technical skills, you can take two paths – either opt for certifications or degrees. The main difference between the two is based on the time taken, cost and knowledge associated with degree or certification. When we talk about certifications, they help the candidate to acquire in-demand job skills after earning a degree.

Through the certification, the candidate can demonstrate knowledge of emerging technology and climb the career ladder. Now, you might be thinking about which certification to opt for, whether you will go for globally recognized vendor-neutral CompTIA certification or choose a university certificate in IT. If you want to avail more career opportunities, opt for CompTIA certifications like A+, Security+ and Network+ certifications to gain the practical knowledge needed to perform critical tasks. Also, many well recognized IT firms like Dell and HP prefer to hire CompTIA certified candidates and are willing to pay them more.

On the other hand, if you go for a university degree, the credibility of it will depend on the institution, whether it's recognized and are companies willing to hire (and at what pay rate) a candidate with credentials from that school.

So, in the end, the answer is: It depends! CompTIA certification as it's a globally recognized certification and often pays well. It is also a lot faster than a degree. A degree, depending on both your job market and the reputation of the school can be the way to go. And sometimes the answer is both. It all depends on your personal preferences vs your job market.
