  • 1.  Storage backplane for VIOS with E1050

    Hi,
    I would like to have redundancy for back-plane for NVMe EJ0Q for a E1050 9043-MRX server.
    My customer will do mirroring at the VIOS rootvg level but he would like to have also redundancy for the backplane. (It is supported on S1022)
    On the sales manual, only 1 is allowed.
    (#EJ0Q) - Storage Backplane with Zero DASD 8 SAS 2.5" HDD/SDD Controllers
    Minimum required: 0
    Maximum allowed: 1 (Initial order maximum: 1)

    What is the solution to have disk access redundancy on E1050 ?

    Dear Thierry

    An NVMe backplane in S1022/1024 connects to an NVMe JBOF adapter that consumes a PCIe slot in the server.  The backplane in E1050 does NOT consume a PCIe slot as it is built as part of CEC components. You should ask your customer if they trust the stability of E1050 CEC HW or not?  In general, those who do not may deploy an additional HA or DR server to address the concern.  In such a dual-server case, there is less reason to worry about the absence of HW redundancy of a single E1050 built-in backplane.

    But if your customer really wants HW redundancy for NVMe within an E1050 server, you need to adopt the same approach as in S1022/1024 which is to use 2 sets of NVMe that connect to 2 PCIe slots.  For example, use Flash Adapter EC7B/D/F or use Enterprise SAS SSD that connects to SAS adapater, all of which consume PCIe slots.

    in addition of the informations of Satid I will add the fact, that the NVMe devices on E1050 are connected directly to two DCMs. In Redbook

    you can find at chapter 3.5 the recommendation how to plug the devices to get most redundance.
    Because there are no additional logic components it isn't neccessary to have 2 of them...
