  • 1.  starting ADMIN2 in QHTTPSVRR by itself

    Posted Tue January 24, 2023 05:20 PM
I still need to use iNavigator Heritage Edition(about once a year). I need to access the IFS without ACS.
Does anyone know what else starts with this job? Also, can it be started by itself and how is that done? I'm already running the other ADIMIN's 1,3,4,5.
Or is there another way to access the IFS folders, I'm not inclined to want to map a network drive if I can avoid it, for mostly security reasons.

    Dear Raymond

    >>>> I still need to use iNavigator Heritage Edition(about once a year) <<<<

What is the reason for such a once-in-a-year need ? Whatever functions in Heritage Navigator should also be available in the new one.  There may be an alternative way if you explain your motive for such a need.

To access the heritage Navigator for i, first you run WRKACTJOB SBS(QHTTPSVR) to make sure the subsystem is up and running ADMINn jobs that includes ADMIN2. ADMIN2 job no longer starts with the subsystem if you have very recent relevant PTF applied.  If the subsystem is not up, you start it by STRTCPSVR SERVER(*HTTP) HTTPSVR(*ADMIN).

Now that you indicate all ADMINn are running but no ADMIN2, you enable (and disable when it is no longer needed) ADMIN2 by following the instruction in this Technote : IBM Navigator for i - Heritage Version

By "access", what detailed operations do you need to perform ?   Without knowing your details, you can access IFS from 5250 session with WRKLNK command or use IFS function in the New Navigator for i GUI or QShell interface if you are familiar with UNIX shell. Even FTP gives you basic IFS file manipulation: Using FTP with IFS files.

    Satid,
I was going to argue with you.  Then I realized I'm a http group or two behind and maybe the options are there now.  Are IFS options available now?
Maybe it's time to upgrade my sandbox lpar instead of waiting for the downtime.
OTOH, it's getting migrated to P10 next week so I probably want to keep still until then.

What are you trying to do with IFS?
If it's just upload/download then FileZilla can be great.  Some people like WinSCP but I stick with what I know.

Thanks for your quick reply Satid.

I'm aware that there are multiple ways to get a file into the IFS as Robert mentioned. This user does not have the bandwidth to do anything more that upload a file from their pc to a directory once a year as they have done with Heritage forever. As I mentioned in my original email, they to not use ACS they use another 3rd party emulator, so ACS features in a 5250 emulation session are not an option.

Like Robert Berendt the only option I see in the File System is File Shares, am I missing PTFS's by chance, that would expand those options, this is what I have now.

    SF99740               CUMULATIVE PTF PACKAGE C2125740
    and
SF99662               IBM HTTP SERVER FOR I

Raymond.  If you want to see something really cool try iACS Run SQL Scripts to check PTF levels.
Then pick Edit, Examples, Insert from Examples.  Pick IBM i Services.  Pick PTF - Group PTF Currency
    run that.
This will compare what PTF group levels you have vs what are available at IBM's site.  For example

    Note this:
    IBM i 7.4 - TR7 Enhancements
The following enhancements to Navigator are included:
    ...
    • File System - IFS tree table support
    ...

Tell you what Raymond, I'll upgrade my 7.4 machines right this minute.  It's 8am on a Thursday but what the heck.  I'll do it.  Not only will I be able to see the IFS updates but I'll have the latest PTF's in case my P10 migration requires them.

    Hi Raymond,
I cannot tell which level of the group and CUM packages you have, but 25 is the latest: HTTP SF99662 - 25.

With that, you will see the IFS support, but not upload/download yet.  IFS upload and download functions for IBM Navigator for i are in progress, and should be available with the next update for IBM Navigator for i.

You can view PTFs and get to the details page for IBM Navigator for i from here:  https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/6486565.
The IFS initial support came out in the 2022 Q3 PTFs.

The LDAP interface also runs in ADMIN2 (to answer initial question within the first post of this thread).  More information on starting and stopping ADMIN2 server can be found here: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/6556828.
