  • 1.  New fragile VIO dependencies

    Posted Mon March 21, 2022 05:28 PM
I just installed the first VIO server in a dual VIO pair in a new system on an in-progress network. As a result our IPs, hostnames, and DNS are in a state of flux. No LPARs yet, no SSP or VIO layer clustering.

I was able to use the HMC to do an install using HMC's NIMOL code from an ISO image I uploaded previously. Unfortunately the VIO LPAR received the wrong hostname due to reverse lookups, which was rapidly fixed. The hostname is set in inet0, the IP on en2. Rebooted to ensure changes persist. Reverse DNS lookups are currently wrong, and will be corrected overnight.

Every subsequent attempt to install the second VIO server from NIMOL on the HMC has failed, because when starting the installation the HMC fails to talk to some VIO storage database on VIO1.

So an invalid hostname or reverse lookup cripples further tasks on the HMC, and once the hostnames are fixed I must download a script from support to repair CMDB. It's so fragile, it can't even track canonical hostname changes on the inet0 device.

Suddenly my intrastructure layer VIO servers have major new external dependencies that can permanently break functionality. I'm stunned and disappointed.

I've tried to repair my VIO install using the script from:

    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/when-using-hmc-gui-you-see-message-unable-connect-database-error-occurred

I can't say I'm confident it worked. I still receive errors about CM_DB. I took a look at the script to see what it did, and while I try to be positive instead of critical, I'd be mortified if I had written that script. It shows a clear lack of shell scripting knowledge.

Instead I'm just reinstalling VIO from NIM along with the secondary VIO, so I don't have to wait on the HMC and a DB.
