  • 1.  Inquiries regarding upgrading from AIX7.1 to AIX7.3

    Dear,

I have some questions regarding upgrading from AIX7.1 to AIX7.3.

    1. Is it possible to upgrade directly from AIX7.1 to AIX7.3? Or should upgrade in the following order: AIX 7.1 --> AIX 7.2 --> AIX 7.3?

    2. 2. When upgrading from AIX7.1 to AIX7.3, are there any restrictions that require updating a specific TL?

    thank you

    Hi,

Moving from one version.release of AIX to a newer version.release is a Migration.

If you are updating to a latest TL ( or maintainance level / within same version.release) is an Upgrade or Update.

    Answers to your questions

    1. Yes, you can directly migrate from AIX 7.1 to 7.3
    2.  There aren't any specific TL restrictions for a migration.

This link will be very useful to you in understanding the AIX migration.

Hi bro, i have a similar case but its complicated
Currently we have POWER8 servers with AIX 7.1
We planning to move to POWER10 with AIX 7.3
Our problem is we cannot upgraded AIX 7.1  to AIX 7.3 in Power8 and then move to POWER10 because it doesn't support
Also moving AIX 7.1 to POWER10 first and then upgrade to AIX 7.3 also doesn't support
Please advise how shall we go ahead
AIX filesystems are in Nimble storage

    Hi Arun,

I think you should be using nimadm to perform a client to mksysb migration. What nimadm's client to mksysb migration will do is - Using a copy of rootvg, create a new NIM mksysb resource that is migrated to a new version or release level of AIX.

Once, you have the new migrated mksysb (AIX 7.3), you can use this to do an mksysb install on the latest hardware.

If you are looking for a more automated way, you can also use NIM's nim_move_up command which will do the same above steps by itself.

When you download the installation image for AIX 7.3 there are Release Notes that covers both the migration process and anything you need to be aware off (also called the ReadMe).

Do not for get to backup everything twice and make a mksysb - save these on a different machine.

If your storage has these functions: snapshot or clone the disks.

Always migrate/upgrade to the latest TL. Never run with TL0.
