    Hi, we have some issues to propose Merlin instead of RDI or Visual Studio with IBMi Plugin.

    What's about Merlin from your point of view? Any suggestion or use case to share with us?

    Hi Luca,

     

    from my perspective Merlin is a way to sell the Red Hat Open Shift stuff to IBM i customers.

    Therefore it is really good because you need it in one way or the other.

     

    I don't see any benefit for a customer using Merlin and I can't understand why one should really buy or rent it.

    Instead of spending so much Time, Energy and Money into Merlin IBM should focus on the Code4i Add On for Visual Studio Code.

    If you want to have more RPG and IBM I Developers you need to do something for the Community.

     

    Microsoft shows that all the time and they have many, many developers.

     

    I teach a lot of People in Developing on IBM i. With CL, RPG, SQL, Node.js, Python, c# (yes – not on IBM i but with IBM i) and everything that will come and the RPG people (even the young ones) are not angry about RPG (we use a very modern Microservice RPG pattern – but even with old RPG II they accept to work) but they are angry with the tools.

    They all know and use Visual Studio and/or Visual Studio Code and know the comfort and also want to have that on IBM i.

     

    So why make it so complicated?

    Stop working on Merlin and put all the energy, time and money into the Code4i Add Ons.

     

    That is my opinion and even IBM employees related to the topic share this with me but are not allowed to talk about it....

    I could not agree more with Markus - Merlin is an unwarranted (and unwanted) distraction and unless IBM re-think and start providing FREE development tools (and VS Code is an ideal opportunity for them) then both RPG and the machine are doomed.

    I'm a big fan of RDi and promote it at every turn, but it is full of bugs, completely inconsistent in operation between languages and crashes a lot...making it very difficult to defend from developers who are long in the tooth and insistent on sticking with SEU.

    For me, the lack of a screen/report designer and context-sensitive language help in VS Code are the only things stopping me from making the jump to VS Code right now.

    as a privileged point of view as a PreSales in direct contact with prospect customers,  what are the critical issue you are having in the first place? Price, complexity, expertise etc.? please elaborate...
